Waikato Celebrates Super Seth's Winning Return

Mark Smith - Saturday February 1

The Chittick family of Waikato Stud let out a collective sigh of relief when the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas hero Super Seth made his 2020 bow in Saturday’s $160,000 Group III Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and showed he had lost nothing in the interim..

Run in steady rain and with regular rider Mark Zahra in the saddle, Super Seth wore down the front-running Unencumbered colt Free Of Debt to win quite cosily by one and a quarter lengths with the Dalakhani colt Dalasan doing his best work in the final 100 metres to be a head back in third.

Zahra said that Super Seth was as genuine as they come.

“A lot of horses would have given up at the furlong because the leader gave a good kick but once I got within a half length he just took off, he knows where the finishing line is,” Zahra enthused.

“He’s come back bigger and better than ever.”

Winning trainer Anthony Freedman has set an ambitious programme for the son of Dundeel in the autumn, with his next assignment likely to be the CS Hayes Stakes where his opponents could include the hugely popular  Alligator Blood and New Zealand’s rising star Catalyst.

“It was an impressive performance. I wasn’t too sure about the ground but the Dundeels can generally get through it and it opens up a possibility in Sydney if they get rain up there,” Freedman said.

“He’ll probably go to the Hayes Stakes in two weeks and then the (Group 1 Australian) Guineas and after that we’ll see what’s in Sydney for him.”

Freedman said he was thrilled for Waikato Stud.

"They paid a lot of money for him and they were a bit nervous about the ground today and I said ‘look, we’ll run as that keeps us on track’,” he said.

Bred by Arrowfield Pastoral and Planette Thoroughbreds Super Seth advances his record to 5 wins and 1 third from 8 starts with earnings of $1,512,100.

Purchased by Dean Hawthorne for $280,000 on behalf of Jonathon Munz and partners, from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2018 Australian Easter Yearling Sale Book Super is a half-brother to the Listed Scone RC Inglis 3YO Guineas and Listed VRC Poseidon Stakes winner Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom) out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Salutations who is a daughter of the Group II SAJC Yallambee Classic and Listed STC Birthday Card Stakes winner Toast Of The Coast (Rory’s Jester).

A full-sister to Super Seth was purchased by Sandra Harding for $70,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She has been named Salutadeel and is in training with Peter and Paul Snowden at Randwick.

After slipping in 2017, Salutations had a Dundeel colt last spring and was bred back to the 6-time Group 1 winning son of High Chaparral (IRE).
