Invincible Colt Wins G3 Black Opal

Tara Madgwick - Sunday March 8

Yarraman Park’s champion sire I Am Invincible posted his third new stakes-winner this weekend when promising colt Barbaric carried the China Horse Club colours to victory in the Group III Black Opal Stakes (1200m) at Canberra on Sunday.

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, who had three runners in the race, Barbaric finished off too well for Kerrin McEvoy between runners to snatch a narrow win over his stablemate Bartley with the race favourite Cellsabeel a close up third.

“He looks a racehorse, a really nice horse going forward,” said Peter Snowden.

“He really wants to win and helps himself with his good attitude.”

Barbaric as a yearlingA $900,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Segenhoe draft for China Horse Club/Newgate Bstock/WinStar Farm, Barbaric runs for a big syndicate of international and local bloodstock investors headed by Newgate Farm.

He has the tidy record of three starts for two wins with prizemoney topping $180,000.

Bred by Segenhoe in partnership, Barbaric is a half-brother to Group III placed Diddles and is the fifth winner from Group III winner Mimi Le Brock, who also won a Magic Millions 2YO Classic and was Group I placed in the VRC Emirates Stakes and Myer Classic.

Barbaric is the 54th stakes-winner for I Am Invincible and caps a successful weekend for him that has also produced two more new stakes-winners in Dame Giselle and Sangria taking his overall seasonal earnings in excess of $11million.
