Sires of Dams of Group I Winners

Tara Madgwick - Monday June 23
Mark Smith has already detailed the sires that produced more than one Group I winner in Australia this season, but what about the sires of their dams, which is the other half of the equation.

ZabeelNo prizes for guessing Zabeel on top here as the sire of the dam of three individual Group I winners in It's a Dundeel (by High Chaparral (IRE), Atlantic Jewel (by Fastnet Rock) and Silent Achiever (by O'Reilly).

All were multiple Group I winners sired by Northern Dancer line sires from varying branches.

Zabeel will be crowned Champion Australian Broodmare Sire at the end of this season, his daughters producing some 17 stakes-winners to date with progeny earnings topping $16 million with a month of the season still to run.

He has a big margin over Danehill in second place, who has in turn a good margin over Redoute's Choice, who is proving a very powerful influence as a broodmare sire given his youth in comparison to the division leaders.

Danehill and Redoute's Choice both featured as sires of the dams of Group I winners this season – Cosmic Endeavour, by Northern Meteor from a daughter of Danehill, Zoustar, by Northern Meteor from a daughter of Redoute's Choice and Sacred Falls, by O'Reilly from a daughter of Redoute's Choice.

The only other broodmare sires to produce two Group I winners are former Widden Stud shuttler Anabaa (USA), who gave us Buffering (by Mossman) and Dissident (by Sebring), and Emirates Park's Secret Savings (USA), sire of the dams of Almalad (Al Maher) and Samaready (More Than Ready (USA).
