Bargain Buy Claims Christmas Stakes

Mark Smith - Friday December 26

Bargain basement weanling Tried and Tired earned his maiden stakes victory in Friday's Listed Jackie Loughlin Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Sandown-Lakeside.

Given a superb ride by gun Western Australian apprentice Chris Parnham, Tried And Tired fought off the challenge of favourite Lord Of The Sky to win by 1 ¾-lengths with Go The Knuckle a further 1 ¼-lengths away in third.

"I thought he needed his last run and I thought we'd come back a furlong and see what happens, luck's a fortune," said Leon Corstens, who trains Tried And Tired in partnership with son Troy.

A $1,700 purchase from the Chatswood Stud draft at the 2010 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, Tried And Tired takes his overall record to 7 wins, 2 seconds from 15 starts for earnings of $268,935.

The 5yo gelded son of Niello is the third foal of the Redoute's Choice mare Yawn whose dam Energy Boom (Star Watch) is a half-sister to Group II Silver Slipper Stakes and Group III Breeders' Plate winner Pre Catalan (Lunchtime).

Yawn was exported to China in May last year.

Tried and Tired is the second stakes-winner for Lonhro's triple Group 1 winning brother Niello who died in August 2011 after six seasons at stud.
