Lonhro's Roheryn Adds to the Family Fortunes

Mark Smith - Saturday August 22

Roheryn is such a likeable sort with a top-notch pedigree, Godolphin may be having second thoughts about gelding him after his lost his unbeaten record back in November 2018.

After winning his first two starts, the son of Lonhro was beaten as an odd-on favourite at Canterbury. When he made a winning reappearance at Randwick 37 weeks later, he did so without his testicles.

Since those promising early days, the 5yo gelding has been racing consistently but had not been asked to compete at stakes level until Saturday’s Group III Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick.

Ridden by Jason Collett, the James Cummings-trained gelding made his race fitness count when holding the booming finish of the top-class kiwi Probabeel (Savabeel) by a neck with the former West Australian gelding Special Reward (Demerit) a half-head back in third.

With his first stakes win in the bag, Roheryn advances his record to 6 wins and 3 seconds from 14 starts with earnings of $450,150.

uo;He’s been a bit of an underrated horse. He was in a good race today and had to take a big leap,” Cummings said.

“They talk about horses hitting flat spots before the home turn well Roheryn hit the flat spots of all flat spots today. Jason knows the horse and has a bit of a connection with him so when he got hin limbered up and once he gets him through his gears, he has a beautiful liquid action.

“It was great to see him eating up the ground although he may have been a bit lucky and hold the race as Probabeel stormed home but he is deserving of a good race as he has had a bit of a boom on hin since he debuted.”

A half-brother to Group 1 VRC Victoria Derby hero Benicio and the Group II MVRC Sportingbet Classic winner Romneya, Roheryn is the final foal of Mannington who was purchased by Darley for $2,050,000 at the 2005 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale.

A Group III winning half-sister to Coolmore Classic heroine Bollinger, Mannington is the product of multiple champion stallion Danehill and the Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay.

Lonhro (Mark Smith)

Mannington spent a good deal of her broodmare career overseas, leaving our shores in 2005 before being repatriated in 2013.

In America, she left the unraced Kingmambo filly Rose Trail who is the dam of the French Group III winner Rose Imperial (Pivotal) and the dual Listed winner Rosental (Pivotal).

Romneya is the dam of the multiple Group-placed Matilija (Medaglia d'Oro) and another daughter of Mannington, Rhema is the dam of the Group II ATC Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Always Allison.

Mannington died in May 2017. She had 11 foals, nine got to the track with seven winners.

Roheryn becomes the 89th stakes-winner for the champion Lonhro who will command a fee of $66,000 at his 17th season at stud at Darley this spring.
