West Australian star Scales Of Justice will target Caulfield's Group I handicaps during the upcoming spring carnival.
Trainer Lindsey Smith originally had ambitions to run Scales Of Justice in the Group I Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley but that plan was scuppered after a less-than-convincing win in the Group III Strickland Stakes (2000m) at Belmont on July 1.
The son of Not A Single Doubt resumes work on Monday following a short freshen-up and will be prepared for the Group I Sir Rupert Clark Stakes (1400m) on September 23 and Group I Toorak Handicap (1600m) on October 14.
Smith told the West Australian that Scales Of Justice would trial in his home state before flying to Melbourne where the gelding will likely be trained from the beach at Warrnambool.
"We'll have him flown to Melbourne soon after he trials," Smith said.
"I don't want to risk keeping him in work here until shortly before the first of his Melbourne races, and then find there's difficulty getting a flight booking."
Hong Kong-based jockey Douglas Whyte inadvertently cost connections of Scales Of Justice victory in the Group I Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot last year when mistaking the position of the winning post but has been granted first refusal on the rides during the two-start Melbourne campaign.
"The Melbourne riding engagements will depend on Douglas' Hong Kong commitments," Smith said.
Scales Of Justice is then expected to return to Perth in preparation for his defence of the Group I Railway Stakes (1600m) in November 25 before a second attempt at the Kingston Town Classic a fortnight later.
