Black Caviar First Born Has a Name

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 15
It's the time of year when owners all over the country are considering names for their rising two year-olds and Black Caviar's first born, a filly by Exceed and Excel has been named as has the first born for More Joyous.

Oscietra is the name chosen for the filly by Exceed and Excel and it's certainly a fitting one as it is one of the most prized types of caviar in the world.

Unbeaten in winning all of her 25 starts, Black Caviar has also made a perfect start to her stud career leaving this lovely filly (pictured just days after being born in 2014) followed by a Sebring colt and is now due to foal to Snitzel.

The big question now is who will train Oscietra given Black Caviar's trainer Peter Moody has put himself out of the picture by closing down his stable in the wake of the cobalt investigation.

Despite being by a champion sire of two year-olds in Exceed and Excel there must be no great expectation she will run early as Oscietra is not among entries for the 2017 Golden Slipper or Blue Diamond.

Two of Black Caviar's female siblings are also now at stud.

Minor winner Belle Couture (by Redoute's Choice), who topped Inglis Easter in 2012 when selling for $2.6 million, produced a colt by Pierro last spring for Love Racing and partners and is due to foal to I Am Invincible.

Black Caviar's full sister Naturale was retired to stud unraced last year by Gilgai Farm, but failed to go in foal to Australian Guineas winner Wandjina.

Her dam Helsinge produced a filly by Canford Cliffs (IRE) last year for Gilgai Farm, but will have no foal his year having missed in 2015.

Still to race is rising three year-old Casino Prince filly Brigite, a full sister to All Too Hard. Now prepared by Ciaron Maher, having previously been with Peter Moody, Brigite has shown ability in jump outs and may yet write her chapter on the track in this unfolding saga.

Black Caviar is not the only famous mare whose first born has been named with John Singleton deciding on the iconic name of Woman for the first foal of his champion mare More Joyous.

The chestnut filly was conceived in the UK and is from the first Southern Hemisphere crop of foals by emerging sire sensation Frankel.

She has been entered in both Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond and given the precocity shown by many of the Frankel two year-olds in Europe this year, Woman may well emulate her dam in being up and running at two.
