Established in 2019, the Glenn Lee Thoroughbreds business operated by Mikayla and Rodney Day out of South Coast based thoroughbred farm Bell View Park has moved to a new phase in 2021 as they consign yearlings for Inglis Classic under their own name for the first time.
Mikayla grew up with horses and was involved in pony club, showjumping and polocrosse since she was five, so moving into a career within the bloodstock industry was a natural progression.
She started working for Bell View Park as a stable hand in 2011 for the Mackrell family, who have always supported her in her bloodstock ambitions, and progressed from there to a role at Newhaven Park as yearling manager under Ken Parsons following her initial training.
She returned closer to home in 2018 to take up a position with Lime Country Thoroughbreds as yearling manager and the following year started Glenn Lee Thoroughbreds with her husband Rodney, the couple naming the business in honour of their respective fathers Glenn and Lee.
“I grew up around motorsport, but once Mikayla was a part of my life horses came naturally to me,” Rodney Day revealed.
“In 2017, it started as helping Mikayla at work on weekends and has developed into a jammed packed horse education in the last four years!
“Bell View Park is a magnificent modern horse farm with irrigated paddocks, world class horse fencing, a horse walker, mare and foal crush, 22 boxes, day yards and single spell yards.
“We spell horses for Robert and Luke Price Racing, Freedman Brothers Racing, Richard Butler Racing and take care of all BVP horses including preparing them for sale, managing the breeding season and looking after their racing stock.”
Yearling preparation is the part of the business Mikayla enjoys best and after preparing 14 Inglis Classic yearlings last year for Newhaven Park, she and Rodney are looking forward to presenting their own Glenn Lee draft at Riverside Stables next month that includes seven yearlings for Waikato Stud and two for Edinglassie.
“Mikayla loves watching the yearlings develop and grow throughout the prep, turning into well-mannered youngsters ready to begin their racing careers,” Rodney said.
“We have two mares of our own to breed and hope to build on this in the future. Selling our first foal out of my first broodmare last year at Inglis Classic for 90k was a real highlight for us.”
Situated just two hours south from Warwick Farm and two hours 20mins from Randwick, Bell View Park is well placed for Sydney based owners and trainers with the 2021 Inglis Classic yearlings available for on farm inspection before they travel to the sale, click to see the draft.
“We have some great clients and we can’t thank everyone enough that has supported us through our first year,” Rodney concluded.
“We are always looking for new opportunities and are happy to take on new clients and trainers and to consign for sales.”
