Impressive Debut Winner for Flying Artie

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 17

The Newgate young gun sires have been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks and it was Flying Artie’s turn on Wednesday when his handsome colt Bourbon Flyer made a winning debut at Randwick.

Prepared by John Thompson, Bourbon Flyer sports the same colours carried by his sire Flying Artie, who placed in both the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper before winning the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes at three.

Bourbon Flyer has a good measure of the same ability and ran up to his recent smart trial form to race forward and skip clear under Hugh Bowman to win the 1100m maiden by a length and a half.

“He’s a very professional colt and has been from day one a very straight forward horse,” said John Thompson.

“He has a good horse’s attitude and aims to please so there is more to come from him.

“Flying Artie is a promising stallion, they are all very similar to him, correct, sound athletic horses.

“We’ll have a throw at the stumps now with this colt and have a run in one of the Slipper lead up races.”

Bourbon Flyer as a yearling.

Bourbon Flyer was recorded as a $50,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for his trainer and runs for a syndicate that includes his breeders, among them Wilf Mula and members of the Whelan family.

Bourbon Flyer is the first foal of stakes-winning Foxwedge mare Kentucky Miss, who was also bred and raced in similar ownership and the same colours.

Kentucky Miss has a yearling filly and filly foal to follow, also by Flying Artie, who will have a runner in this Saturday’s Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes in Artorius.

Flying Artie is doing a great job with his first crop of 2YO's.

Bourbon Flyer is the fifth winner for Flying Artie, who is enjoying solid results at the yearling sales this year with 19 youngsters selling so far at an average $88,894.
