Beau Mertens allowed Speed Street to roll forward from his wide barrier and eventually cross to the lead before the home turn.

Speed Street ($3.80) went further clear in the home straight and although getting tired close home had done enough and held the late rally from Je Suis Tycoon ($13) to score by a half neck.

Speed Street was runner-up on debut at Moonee Valley behind the impressive Explosive Witness and Mertens said the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained son of Al Maher can improve over further.

"I think he'll be better over a bit further," Mertens told Racing Victoria. "He'll be able to get to the front a lot easier and have things his own way.

"It didn't quite work out how I thought it would, I thought we'd be able to sit on the outside of Low Level Flying but Wait For No One kicked up and we were three deep.

"I just let him go around them and do his own thing. To his credit he had to be tough and fight it out.

"He's an impressive horse and he's going places."

Pure Scot ($8) was beaten one length into third place with the $2.80 favourite Wait For No One weakening in the home straight to finish sixth.
