Speed Street lived up to his name to win Saturday's $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush (1000m) at Bendigo.
Beau Mertens allowed Speed Street to roll forward from his wide barrier and eventually cross to the lead before the home turn.
Speed Street ($3.80) went further clear in the home straight and although getting tired close home had done enough and held the late rally from Je Suis Tycoon ($13) to score by a half neck.
Speed Street was runner-up on debut at Moonee Valley behind the impressive Explosive Witness and Mertens said the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained son of Al Maher can improve over further.
