Another Good-en From Tassie Yearling Sale - Smart Coupe Goes 2 for 2
Mark Smith - Wednesday, 5 July 2017

Chalk up another good one from the Tasmanian Yearling Sale, First Light Racing's very talented Smart Missile filly Smart Coupe kept her record at a perfect two for two with a dominant performance in Wednesday's Comcater Handicap (1200m) at Sandown.

Ridden by Linda Meech for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Smart Coupe controlled the race from the front.

She quickened impressively when Meech let the reins out a notch in the straight coming clear to defeat Lady Of Flanders (Viking Ruler) by one and a quarter lengths with Kardashing (Redoute's Choice) a long neck away third.

Added to her facile win at Wangaratta on June 22, Smart Coupe has already earned back her purchase price with interest.

The daughter of Group II Edward Manifold Stakes winner Coupe (Spinning World) was first consigned to the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale where he failed to make his $15,000 reserve.

Put back through the 2016 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale by Grenville Stud, Smart Coupe was knocked down to his trainers for $22,000.

"I was really happy with her today, she was so relaxed going to the gates, she didn't let the occasion get to her," Meech said.

"She was really good in the gates. The other day at Wangaratta things got to her and she got really upset in the gates.

"I though her win at Wangaratta was exceptional, today she was more tradesman like.

Simon Zahra said pre-race he was worried about the last 100m.

"She relaxed quite nicely and had a good look around but I liked the way she finished off," Zahra said.

"She was solid enough but she's just coming to the end (of her preparation) now.

"We'll put her away and she can have a nice little break and maybe come back at the end of spring or early summer."

"We're just happy to get a couple of wins on the board and let her mature up. Her mum got better as she got older and she ended up getting a mile," Zahra said.

"Hopefully, in time she can end up doing the same."

A half-sister to Group I VRC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Coup de Grace (Roi Danzig), Coupe was consigned to the 2015 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale by Newgate Farm where she was purchased by Whittington for $7,000. She was carrying a Eurozone filly at the time of her sale.
