Westbury Stud have announced their 2021 service fees for their six stallions with an exciting move for breeders where all six stallions will stand on a No Foal/No Fee policy.
This will see service fees not due for payment until they have a live foal on the ground at 24 hours of age.
Westbury Stud General Manager Russell Warwick remarked, “The initiative is gaining good momentum in Australia through the likes of Darley and Vinery Stud, and we see it as an advantage for breeders to utilise stallions of their choice without being required to pay for the service until they have a foal on the ground.”
Proven sire Reliable Man will head the 2021 Stallion Roster for Westbury Stud this season at a fee of $17,500 + GST after enjoying a very successful season to date with 11 black type performers including Bob Peter’s Group 1 winner Inspirational Girl, Group 2 winners Miami Bound and Hypnos, Group 3 winner De La Terre and the exciting Melbourne filly Annavisto.
A son of the highly successful sire European sire Dalakhani, Reliable Man was a dual Group 1 winner in his own right and has now left three individual Group 1 winners at stud including the Oaks winners Miami Bound and Sentimental Miss prior to this year’s elite performer Inspirational Girl, while Hypnos was successful in the Coupland’s Bakeries Mile Gr.2 and 3YO filly De La Terre defeated subsequent Group 1 winner Kahma Lass in the Soliloquy Stakes Gr.3.
Reliable Man’s yearlings have once again proven to be popular among buyers at this year’s round of sales selling to $340,000 at Karaka this year.
Dual Group 1 winner Tarzino will remain at his 2020 service fee of $12,000 + GST as his first crop approach their first classic season as 3YOs. By Tavistock from the Zabeel mare Zarzino, Tarzino won the VRC Derby and Rosehill Guineas as a three-year-old and was narrowly beaten in the Australian Guineas Gr.1 over 1600m from the stable of Mick Price.
Tarzino has been very well supported during his first four seasons at stud, covering no less than 495 mares and having a large proportion of his first crop in work with Australian trainers. The Tavistock/Zabeel cross has proven to be very successful with the likes of Werther, Tarzino, Toffee Tongue, Johnny Get Angry, Tralee Rose, Hasselhoof, and Through Irish Eyes.
High Chaparral’s son Redwood is another stallion on the roster to have produced a Group 1 winner in the current season with his ill-fated son Rock on Wood scoring an emphatic win in the Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham. Rock on Wood had been a Group 1 winner in waiting over the past year and it was a great loss for all when he succumbed to an injury incurred in the Thorndon Mile Gr.1.
Another of the talented stock of Redwood was the Group 2 winning 3YO Tokorangi who won the David & Karyn Ellis Classic at Te Rapa, his son Columbus County was Group 1 placed in the Hong Kong Vase, Communique was Group 2 placed and his remaining stakes performers included Platinum Invador, Romancer, Rosewood, and Black Thorn.
Redwood will remain at his 2020 fee of $8000 + GST.
El Roca, a son of Fastnet Rock, will also remain at his 2020 service fee of $8,000 + GST after a strong season particularly with his runners in Hong Kong which has been headed by the quality gelding Lucky Patch. El Roca’s Group 1 winning filly Travelling Light posting Group placings in the NZ Thoroughbred Breeder’s Stakes Gr.1, the Otaki Maori WFA Gr.1, and the Travis Stakes Gr.3; Irish Girl was Group placed and the quality performers Esta La Roca, Summaroca, Mega Bourbon, Tina Again, Everyone’s Delight, Moeraki, and Barcelona Rock have created plenty of appeal.
Swiss Ace represents outstanding value at just $7,500 + GST as he consistently produces high calibre performers and his progeny are keenly sought by overseas jurisdictions. Swiss Ace churns out winners on a weekly basis at all levels and has again been well represented in both Asia and Australasia.
One of the most exciting young horses in Hong Kong is the John Size trained Fantastic Way who has won 3 of his first 4 starts and looks destined for the top grade. Group 1 winner Julius went close to scoring back-to-back wins in the Railway Stakes, finishing second to Avantage after winning the event in 2020, while the Lee Freedman trained Mr Malek was one of the topliners in Singapore during the season.
Telperion makes up the stallion roster at $7,500 + GST and the son of Street Cry could not have started his stud career in better fashion with his first runner being the Group 2 winner Stormy who was trained at Cambridge by Tony Pike and won two of his three starts in New Zealand before being sold for a substantial six figure sum to Hong Kong.
A winner on debut at Awapuni, Stormy headed to Wellington for the Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes, before heading to Ellerslie for the Eclipse Stakes Gr.3 where he stormed home for an unlucky second to Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) and Sword of State (Exceed and Excel).
Telperion has had a number of his first crop showing promise at recent trials and looks to be in for an exciting time ahead.
