Back to its original format, the third day of the 2021 August Yearling Sale hosted Part II of the catalogue.
Demand was strong as well as international, with purchases made by American, English, Irish, French, and Middle Eastern buyers etc.
At the end of the auction, 77% of the 167 lots sold changed hands for an average price of €75,523 (-13%), generating a turnover of €9,667,000 (-7%).
Overall summary of the August Yearling Sale During the whole sale, 324 yearlings passed through the ring with a clearance rate of 76% for an average price of €162,638 (-13% compared to 2019).
The cumulative turnover reached €40,229,000 (-8%).
At the end of the sale, Eric Hoyeau, President of ARQANA and Freddy Powell, Executive Director, commented, “The sale remained very international today and the percentage of horses sold was solid, which made the average slip a little compared to 2019. Over the three days as a whole, the results were pleasing. The context was still uncertain when the catalogue was released and it is a relief to see that this edition is in line with the August Sales that we have held previously, just behind the exceptional year of 2019.
"This is only the third time the turnover has exceeded €40 million and the number of horses sold for €200,000 or more is the same as in 2018.
"We were fortunate to experience a sale in a near-normal atmosphere. We would like to thank our buyers once again who were active on site and remotely, as well as our vendors for having brought yearlings of this quality to the ring.
"After a year “off”, the v.2 makes its comeback tomorrow at Deauville. This sale has produced some very good horses, such as Coeursamba, Teppal and Olmedo, and we hope that it will continue on in the same vein following the success of the August Sale.”
Ecurie des Monceaux leading vendors for tenth consecutive year
At the close of the three days of sales, Ecurie des Monceaux, managed by Henri Bozo, once again took the title of leading consignor with 33 colts and fillies sold for a total of €9,062,000.
The runner-up spot went to Haras d’Etreham, that sold 19 yearlings including the top price at the sale for €5,085,000. Haras des Capucines followed, with 19 lots sold for a total of €3,012,000.
Oliver St Lawrence top buyer at the 2021 sale
With six yearlings bought for a total of €3,430,000, Oliver St Lawrence was the leading buyer at the sale. He was followed by Godolphin, that bought six lots for €3,220,000, and Charlie Gordon-Watson, who bought two lots for €2,925,000.
Daughter of New Bay dominates third day of the sale
It was at the end of the day when bidding reached €320,000 for lot 335, a daughter of New Bay offered from Gestüt Ammerland. Licenced with his father John since earlier in the year, young trainer Thady Gosden had the last word on the phone for the granddaughter of two-time Group 1 winner BORGIA, that is also related to Gr 1 Prix Vermeille winner BALTIC BARONESS.
Daughter of Caravaggio for Arthur Hoyeau and Saubouas Bloodstock
The penultimate lot through the ring, the only daughter of Caravaggio in the catalogue proved to be in demand when knocked down for €270,000 to Arthur Hoyeau, bidding beside Paul Basquin (Saubouas Bloodstock). A half-sister to Listed winner YUMAN, she hails from the family of Garden City Stakes (Gr.1) winner ALTERITE and was offered by Haras des Granges. After signing the docket, Arthur Hoyeau said, “She’s the filly we wanted. Caravaggio is a good stallion that gets precocious stock and her dam has also produced well. I’ve bought her for a partnership, and she’ll go into training with Christophe Ferland.”
Son of Wootton Bassett sold for €210,000 online
Bids came from around the ring and online for a son of Wootton Bassett (lot 182), the second foal out of a sister to EXOTERIC from J.K. Thoroughbreds. The gavel finally came down at €210,000 in favour of Michael Donohoe (BBA Ireland), who was bidding remotely via ARQANA Online. A few minutes later, the agent wrote on his Twitter account, “Delighted to have secured this beautiful colt. Hopefully another Wootton Bassett to fly the flag.”
