One to Watch – Wangaratta

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday September 19
The second highest priced offering at the NZB Ready to Run Sale last year was a clear pick as the 'One to Watch' on Tuesday after bolting in at Wangaratta.

Trained by Ciaron Maher, Rellson was fourth on debut as favourite at the start of the month at Bendigo when stewards queried the run, but made no mistakes at the second time of asking.

Rellson at the Ready to RunThe O'Reilly colt travelled back in the field for Luke Nolen and surged into contention coming to the turn.

Rellson let down with a powerful finish, zooming past his rivals to win the 1300 metre maiden by nearly five lengths on the bit and showing just why he was such a favourite at the NZB Ready to Run Sale last year.

Entered for the Caulfield Guineas, Rellson was a $580,000 purchase for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/Bruce Perry Bloodstock/Waterford Bloodstock from the Waikato Stud draft and runs for an ownership group headed by Lib Petagna in whose colours he runs.

Rellson is a three-quarter brother-in-blood to NZ Champion 3YO Alamosa and is the second winner for Savabeel mare Honolulu.

This is a family that has also produced Group I winners Dal Cielo and Lights on Heaven, so it will be no surprise if Rellson goes a long way this season.

The 2017 NZB Ready to Run Sale is now online and features nine yearlings by Rellson's sire O'Reilly.
