Capitalist Winners on Cup Day

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday November 2

Australia’s leading second crop sire by winners, Capitalist made his presence felt on Melbourne Cup Day with three winners highlighted by brilliant colt Profiteer, who scored a dazzling win at Flemington.

Winner of the $2million Inglis Millennium last season, the Mick Price and Mick Kent Jr trained colt was most recently second in the Group III MRC Blue Sapphire Stakes.

Dropped back to 1000m for this assignment, he raced on the pace for James McDonald and kept up a good gallop to the line to win by a length and a half in a slick 57.16 seconds over smart speedsters Direct and Enthaar.

“He’s very fast with good gate speed and a high cruising speed the whole way,” said James McDonald.

“He got taken on, but all credit to him, he came back and relaxed reasonably well and he got the two first furlongs right and the rest was history.”

With three wins and two seconds from seven starts, Profiteer has won over $1.4million and will look to target the Group I VRC Lightning Stakes (1000m) next year.

Profiteer was a $165,000 purchase by Roll The Dice Racing Pty Ltd / Rogers Bloodstock out of the Newgate Farm draft at the 2020 Classic Yearling Sale.

Foaled and raised at Newgate, he is the first foal of Group III placed Snitzel mare Athena Lass, a half-sister to stakes-winner Euryale out of a daughter of the Group I ATC Flight Stakes and Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Danglissa.

Newgate sold a full sister to Profiteer at Magic Millions this year for $375,000 and she has been named Asteria.

Athena Lass has a yearling filly by I Am Invincible, but no foal this spring after missing in 2020. She has been covered this spring by Capitalist.

Profiteer was one of three winners on Tuesday for Capitalist, who also sired progressive filly Satin Ribbons to win at Randwick and promising filly Comrade Rosa to win on debut at Kembla.

A Golden Slipper winning son of Written Tycoon, Capitalist has been super popular this spring at Newgate Farm at a fee of $99,000.
