Hot 2YO Race Tonight

Tara Madgwick - Thursday January 6

The second last foal bred from blue hen Courgette is entered for what looks an intriguing two year-old race at Canterbury on Friday night.

A $650,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Evergreen Stud draft for China Horse Club / Newgate Bloodstock / Darby Racing, the Richard and Michael Freedman trained Snitzel colt Current King won his first trial at Canterbury on December 21 and will be ridden by Hugh Bowman.

Current King as a yearling.

He has a very late foaling date of December 1, which is somewhat unusual, but was certainly no hindrance to champion racehorse Lonhro, who was foaled on December 10.

Current King is a half-brother to Champion 2YO and dual Group I winning Golden Slipper heroine She Will Reign, now at stud in Japan, and Group II ATC Silver Slipper winner Time to Reign, now standing at Kingstar Farm.

Courgette sold for $2.1million in 2018.

Bought by Evergreen Stud for $2.1million at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Courgette has had five foals to race and four have won with the other two winners Rosina Kojonup and Still Reigning both sold as broodmare prospects last year at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Rosina Kojonup( Shamus Award) was bought for $550,000 by Newgate Bloodstock and has been covered by I Am Invincible.

Still Reigning (Time for War) was bought for $600,000 by James Harron Bloodstock and has been covered by Zoustar.

Courgette has a three year-old I Am Invincible colt called Omni Man, who raced once for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott last year, but is now back in work after a spell and won a trial earlier this week.

Sadly for Evegreen, Courgette passed away last year and her final foal is a Snitzel colt that has been entered for the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Race favourite tonight is Pierro filly Paris Dior, who charged home for second to $1.8 million colt Man in the Mirror on debut at Warwick Farm before Christmas, while Ribchester (IRE) will be looking for his first winner with highly regarded Godolphin homebred Portray.
