Scales Of Justice ready to weigh into Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

Tom Walter - Wednesday September 27

Trainer Lindsey Smith is confident Scales Of Justice has made the necessary improvement from his Melbourne debut to be winning Sunday's Group I Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Scales Of Justice, the latest WA star to be unearthed on the eastern seaboard, was wayward in his first look of the Flemington straight earlier this month but finished powerfully to grab second behind Redkirk Warrior in the Group II Bobbie Lewis (1200m).

"He was good first-up. He just decided to go exit right, but they say the straight can be daunting the first time," Smith told the West Australian.

"The way he pulled up after his first-up run, he wasn't that far off, but he has tightened up a bit."

The 2016 Railway Stakes (1600m) hero put in a strong gallop alongside fellow Group I winner and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes contender Lucky Hussler at a soggy Coleraine on Tuesday.

"He worked good on the wet track at Coleraine. The jockey (Brad Rawiller) was smiling and he's looking forward to him at Caulfield on top of the ground," Smith said.

"Depending on his weight, he may have a little breeze-up at Warrnambool on Thursday."

In five second-up runs, Scales Of Justice has won twice and finished runner-up three times.

Meanwhile, WA's champion two-year-old filly from last season Lucy Mae, is set to resume in the 1000m 3YO Plate at Belmont on Saturday.

The Ted Martinovich-trained filly was an impressive barrier trial winner last week and has earned more than half a million dollars to date courtesy of wins in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) and Group II Karrakatta Plate (1200m).
