One to Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Monday April 18

Newgate Farm sire Deep Field has become a great favourite with the Hong Kong market and an eye-catching maiden winner at Warwick Farm on Monday may prick a few ears as a suitable prospect to head north.

Trained by John Thompson, three year-old colt Deep Finesse has had a solid grounding at the trials and finished third on debut at Canberra on March 30.

Drawn 10 in a field of 10 and facing a heavy nine track, Deep Finesse was easy in the market, but dominated his rivals despite drifting wide over the final furlongs, winning the 1100m maiden by four and a half lengths albeit on the outside fence.

Retained to race by his breeder Charles Plumridge, Deep Finesse has very little Black Type on the page so would have been tough to place in a major commercial yearling sale, but with an impressive win on the board he’s now very much a saleable horse!

Deep Field is the sire of Deep Finesse.

Deep Finesse is the second winner from Lady Belladonna (NZ), a winning daughter of Sir Percy (GB) from a family tracing back to celebrated Kiwi matriarch Wuthering Heights, who is his fifth dam.

The ‘Heights’ family has produced countless champions such as Battle Heights, Noble Heights, Mapperley Heights, Sky Heights, not to mention Weekend Hussler and even Melbourne and Caulfield Cup winner Viewed!

Lady Belladonna was covered by Deep Field’s Group II winning son Cosmic Force last spring.
