Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 8

A massive set of 20 trials at Randwick on the polytrack were run on Friday morning featuring 11 heats won by juveniles including a royally bred Zoustar colt that won by nine lengths, a Churchill (IRE) colt that has class 3YO written all over him and an unraced Snitzel filly from THE family.

We’ve already seen Churchill colt Conqueror at the races once already and the Chris Waller  trained Star Thoroughbreds colour bearer was a stylish midweek winner on the Kensington track back in January.

He was having his first outing since then and cruised up along the fence for Hugh Bowman under a hold to win by half a length and was clearly still in second gear.

A $180,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Star Thoroughbreds / Randwick Bloodstock Agency from the Byerley Stud draft, Conqueror runs for a big syndicate of Star owners, who include his breeder Howard Blight.

Conqueror was a $180,000 Inglis Classic purchase.

Conqueror is the first foal of good metro winning Star Witness mare Dixie Chick, who was also bred and raced by Mr Blight.

Running a second quicker time than Conqueror was unraced Zoustar colt Scientist, who was fast from the gates and galloped into a different post code when cruising home to win by nine lengths under Tim Clark.

The first horse behind him was Miss Faberge, who was competitive in several Group races during the autumn, so you have to think this was pretty impressive!

It was the first trial for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt, who is the first foal of their former dual Group I winner Global Glamour. He was a $600,000 Magic Millions purchase for his trainers from the Coolmore draft and runs for Coolmore and partners.

Scientist was a $600,000 Magic Millions purchase.

Interestingly, both Conqueror and Scientist are from daughters of Star Witness.

Another unraced heat winner to catch our eye was the Mark Newnham trained Snitzel filly Crystalane, who had two handy trials in good company back in January and was having her first trial since then.

She travelled deep all the way for Tyler Schiller and was strong all the way to the line on the bit to win by a head.

A $475,000 Inglis Easter purchase for IRON / George Moore Bloodstock from the Sledmere Stud draft, Crystalane was bred by China Horse Club and is a sister to Group I placed filly Meritable.

Crystalane was a $475,000 Inglis Easter purchase.

She is from blue-blood Encosta de Lago mare Crystal Flute, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group I winner Manhattan Rain and full sister to Group III winner Precious Lorraine and stakes-winner Lucky Raquie.

Her second dam Monsoon Wedding is a full sister to Redoute’s Choice, so it’s that family and she gets a double cross of it being by a Redoute’s Choice sire son in Snitzel, but the tabulated pedigree below explains the story better!

Other heat winners were: Dame Cartland (Written Tycoon), Nolan (Caravaggio (USA), Bunker Hut (Savabeel), Pretty Shamrock (Written Tycoon), Wellerman (Pierro), Krilich (Deep Field), Spiritchaser (Show a Heart) and Fire and Ice (Hellbent).
