Second Season Surprise Provides a Value Punt

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday September 13

At this time of year it only takes one smart horse on the track to be a game changer for a young sire, whose stocks can rise at a rapid rate.

Supido , click for more info.

At the end of last season, Widden Stud’s Supido finished with two winners and one Group-placed horse Kosta’s Crown from his first crop of 14 runners, but a month and a half into the new season, he’s upped the ante considerably.

The Group III winning sprinter by Sebring has made a fast start to the season with five winners from 15 runners and is the first of the second season sires to post a stakes-winner.

His quality colt Buenos Noches won the Listed VRC Poseidon Stakes at Flemington last Saturday for the Matthew Smith stable and will progress to either the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas or VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes, while there are also high hopes for the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr trained colt What You Need.

An impressive debut winner at Geelong last month, the Group II VRC Danehill Stakes (1200m) on October 1 has been mentioned as a likely target enroute to the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Supido now splits Hellbent and Russian Revolution on the Second Season Sires table and while those two stallions are fully booked, Supido offers some real value at his $8,800 fee for breeders looking to punt a young sire on the up.

Supido has covered over 400 mares in his first four seasons and will no doubt garner support this year as the spring unfolds if his key horses continue to deliver the goods.
