Breeders Plate History Makes it a Watch Race

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 30

It might be a Group III scamper for unraced colts, but the Group III ATC Breeders’ Plate (1000m) has a knack for producing a serious colt that can go on to be a champion sire.

Champion sire Snitzel started his career with a win in the Breeders' Plate.

Run as a Listed race until 2018, the Breeders Plate has produced some stellar winners since 2000 that include: Choisir, Charge Forward, Snitzel, Sebring (run in autumn due to EI), Smart Missile, Pierro, Vancouver and Capitalist.

While some colts win this race and never progress, the colts above all went on to scale greater heights before ultimately retiring to stud and all have produced Group I winners with the exception of Vancouver, who will have a runner in this year’s Everest in Overpass.

Given the race history it’s no wonder we see another quality line up of colts to run on Saturday and just maybe one of them will go on to be a champion sire of the future, but which one?

The big stallion syndicates will be hoping it’s one of their colts with Mach Ten running for the James Harron group and Empire of Japan and Make a Call competing for China Horse Club, Newgate and partners.

All will be revealed at 11.50am.
