Everyone Deserves a Second Chance

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 17

Back in 2015, the talk at Magic Millions was all about a first season sire who did the unthinkable and topped the sale with a colt from his first crop that sold for $1.2million.

That sire was Sepoy, the Champion 2YO and 3YO Sprinting Colt that dominated his peers on the track and appeared likely to do the same at stud based on the sale ring results from 2015, but as can often happen it didn’t turn out that way.

The reason for revisiting the story of Sepoy is the prevalence of yearlings from his daughters at the sale last week and their warm reception from buyers.

There were 28 yearlings from mares by Sepoy in Book 1 and 2 and they were all sold with half of them selling for $200,000 or more.

Highlights from Sepoy mares were Willow Park Stud’s Snitzel filly from Acqume that made $950,000 to the bid of Ciaron Maher Bloodstock and the Zoustar filly from Counterplay that made $650,000 for Widden Stud when bought by Laurel Oak Bloodstock.

Other high-profile sales were the $450,000 Pierro colt from Sweet Scandal to Danny O’Brien Racing, the Trapeze Artist col from Lone that made $400,000 bought by Clarke Bloodstock and the $400,000 I Am Invincible colt from Nuclear Blitz that made $400,000 to the bid of Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/Group 1 Bloodstock.

Sepoy covered some exceptional mares in his early seasons at stud and as a result has some beautifully related young mares now being covered by the best of sires, so they may well make their mark.

For the record, Sepoy is the sire of 22 stakes-winners worldwide highlighted by two Group I winners in Alizee and the Northern Hemisphere bred Salute the Soldier.

As a broodmare sire it’s very early days, but his daughters have produced six stakes-placed runners so far among 17 winners.
