Gosford preparing for a big day out on Melbourne Cup day

Clinton Payne - Wednesday October 11

The Gosford Race Club (The Entertainment Grounds) will conduct their second annual picnic meeting on Melbourne Cup day which they expect to be bigger and better on November 7.

The meeting will feature a five race card, TAB and bookmaker services, Live Music by The Kranks, Fashions on the Field, a Hair and Beauty Bar.

"Following on such a successful day for our inaugural event in 2016, the Melbourne Cup picnic race meeting has already gained quite significant interest from patrons with most of the hospitality packages available in our function rooms close to being sold out," CEO Daniel Lacey said.

"This year, one of our aims is to attract greater field numbers so we are implementing different incentives for our picnic meeting in 2017 for trainers, owners and jockeys alike."

This year the club will offer trainers a carrot with the introduction of the Picnic Trainer's League with a prize pool of $1500.

"The rules are very simple every trainer that starts a horse receives one (1) point, a first place finish receives four (4) points, second place three (3) points and third place two (2) points," the release said.

"The trainer with the most amount of points after the five (5) races will receive $1250 and the runner up $250.

"In addition every trainer who accepts and does not scratch (late barrier scratching's excepted) will be entitled to a $100 hospitality voucher (one voucher per trainer) to be used on the day.

"Owners are not forgotten with a $50 hospitality voucher being awarded to the collective ownership of each starter.

"All jockeys are eligible for a $250 travel allowance that is payable by Gosford Race Club."

Hospitality packages are selling quickly for the meeting but there is still room and you can secure a place by contacting the club.

Package costs are - $90 per person ($85 for members) which includes racecourse admission, member's entry, racebook and a delicious buffet luncheon or $135 per person which includes racecourse admission, a race book, a delicious buffet luncheon and a four hour beverage package.
