Catalogue Live for Inaugural Weanling and Broodmare Sale

Breednet - Tuesday May 9

New Zealand Bloodstock’s newly formed National Weanling and Broodmare Sale catalogue is now live, with the 253-lot Sale set to be held on Friday 16 June.

The dedicated weanling-only format has been well adopted by buyers and will be complimented this year by a support of quality broodmares.

The 183 weanlings on offer create an opportunity for both pinhookers and end users to secure quality stock, with the session renowned as a proven source of racetrack and investment success.

Group One winners Pignan (NZ) (Staphanos), Callsign Mav (NZ) (Atlante) and Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) were all purchased as weanlings from Karaka for no more than $15,000.

Karaka Million hero Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) was also initially purchased from the Sale for $50,000 before being reoffered at the National Yearling Sales Series later that year and realising $125,000.

Buyers will have the opportunity to secure the same calibre of potential performers, with the progeny of established sires such as Proisir, Per Incanto, Ocean Park and Darci Brahma on offer, as well as an early look at exciting first-season sires Banquo, Circus Maximus, Earthlight, Hello Youmzain, King of Comedy and Peltzer.

There is plenty of quality on the dams’ side of the weanling pedigrees as well, featuring the progeny of 11 stakes-winning mares, including Group winners Belle Fascino (NZ) (Lot 17), Ticket to Ride (NZ) (Lot 172) and Tinkalicious (NZ) (Lot 173).

Well-bred weanlings who are siblings to proven black-type stars such as Tokorangi (NZ) (Lot 5), Opalescence (NZ) (Lot 49), Consensus (NZ) (Lot 70), Contagious (NZ) (Lot 127), First Impressions (NZ) (Lot 161), Tinkalicious (NZ) (Lot 173) and more will also be on offer.

The Broodmare session includes 70 mares to go under the hammer, 61 of which are being offered in foal to sires such as Proisir, Satono Aladdin, Super Seth, Sword of State, Tarzino, Ardrossan and more, plus the sale of multiple Group One winner Xanadu (NZ) (Lot 253).

New Zealand Bloodstock Sales Manager Kane Jones is looking forward to the Sale and the quality catalogue on offer.

“This Sale always attracts strong international and domestic participation and I expect keen interest from a large contingent of pinhookers, as well as traders and end-users alike.”

“There is a real appetite for the New Zealand product, given the outstanding racetrack success throughout Australasia and further afield in recent times. The dominance of the New Zealand bred horses at The Championships is testament to that.

“The quality and strength of our local proven stallions is as high as ever and the market is eagerly anticipating the first opportunity to purchase progeny of exciting local freshman sires Banquo, Circus Maximus, Hello Youmzain and King Of Comedy.

“We are thrilled to re-introduce the broodmare session and look forward to offering buyers the opportunity to invest in quality breeding stock,” commented Jones.

All weanlings purchased are eligible for the lucrative Karaka Million Series, with two $1 million features available for graduates as two and three-year-olds, plus the $120,000 Collinson Forex Karaka Cup for the duration of their career.

All horses will be inspected by NZB agents who are available to assist buyers with enquiries. Buyers are also welcome to join the on-farm parades prior to the Sale, with a schedule to be announced.
