Foxy Frida Gives Them a Belting in RA Lee Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday May 20

Racing in career-best form, the five-year-old Foxwedge mare Foxy Frida was in a class of her own in the Group III R A Lee Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday.

Given a patient ride by Billy Egan, the Andrew Noblet-trained mare was like a coiled spring on straightening. When asked for an effort, the response was immediate. Darting back towards the rail, Foxy Frida went from fifth to first in 50m, defeating the old warrior So Si Bon (So You Think) by a widening two-and-a-quarter length with Party Princess (So You Think) a neck back in third.

The winner of the Listed Centaurea Stakes at this carnival last year, Foxy Frida advances her record to eight wins and seven seconds from 24 starts with earnings of $800,370.

“She has been very good for the stable: she never stops trying and races well here,” Noblet said.

“There is a nice fillies and mares WFA over a mile at Eagle Farm on June 6, so if she pulls up well, she will be on the plane.

“He (Egan) rides this horse very well and understands her. I was never really worried, but he had to weave his way through, and she hit the line well.”

The winner of the Bendigo Gold Bracelet on April 1, Foxy Frida finished second to the 3yo filly Caste in the Group II Queen of the South Stakes at Morphettville at her most recent start.

Bred by Mill Park and Kellie McCarthy, Foxy Frida failed to make her $50,000 reserve at the 2019 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Foxy Frida fell short of her $50,000 reserve at Inglis Premier

A half-sister to the multiple stakes-placed Ritratto (Fiorente), Foxy Frida is the best of four winners from as many to race out of the 4-time winner Family Portrait (Excellent Art).

Andrew Noblet Racing had the final say at $160,000 for a Hellbent filly out of Family Portrait consigned by Mill Park to the 2023 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

After foaling a King’s Legacy colt last spring, Family Portrait was covered by Pinatubo (IRE) but missed.

Foxwedge stands at Woodside Park Stud for a fee of $11,000.
