Amelia's Jewel All Class in Stocks Stakes

Mark Smith - Friday September 29

Given a positive ride by Damian Lane, Amelia's Jewel needed a track record-breaking performance to capture Friday night's Group II Ladbrokes Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The Western Australian superstar had to pull out all stops to chase down the rejuvenated Pride Of Jenni.

In what many view as a Cox Plate preview, the 4-year-old daughter of Siyouni (FR) defeated the 6-year-old High Chapparal (IRE) mare Pride Of Jenni by three-quarters of a length with the 4-year-old So You Think mare Party Princess two and a quarter lengths back in third.

Coming off a fast-finishing come-from-behind win in the Group II Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington at her eastern states debut, the Simon Miller-trained mare advances her record to nine wins and two seconds from 11 starts with earnings of $2,744,100.

Damian Lane said Amelia's Jewel never flinched in chasing down Pride Of Jenni, who was not about to surrender without a fight.

"I had to ask her for a bit of an effort," Lane said. "Pride Of Jenni made a real race of it, and I was just glad I was able to put her in a position because if I was off the pace, I might not have caught her.

"She's doing things really well. I think she still has a bit more to come, so it's exciting time.

"The way she handled The Valley, I'd recommend staying in Melbourne, but we'll see what the ownership group thinks and work on a plan from there."

Simon Miller indicated the Cox Plate is the likely target.

"I'm tipping another four hundred plus metres… it's on the cards," Miller said.

"Frosty (Lane) will help play a major part in that, I think the great thing is, if it was a track record, then clearly she can absorb pressure.

"Deano (Lester) used to always say to me, "she's better when there's high pressure because she can absorb it then go."

"She just looks like she's doing it so easily. When we were outside the leader, I thought oh well, she's never been here before, but I didn't give Frosty any instructions. I just said '"you do you, and I'll do me."

"We've still got heaps of room; she's not wound up yet, and her coat's improving, but from a fitness point of view, we've got heaps of wiggle room, she's not screwed down yet."

A daughter of Haras de Bonneval's champion stallion Siyouni (FR), Amelia's Jewel is the first foal of the stakes placed Canford Cliffs mare Bumbasina (IRE), who was 75,000 guineas purchase for Louis Le Metayer's Astute Bloodstock at the 2019 Tattersalls July Sale.

A half-sister to Group II winner Epona Plays (Australia) and Group III winner Dolce Strega (Zoffany), Bumbasina (IRE) has a 2-year-old Blue Point (IRE) colt named Bosustow, which was a $900,000 purchase for Rosemont Alliance/Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA)/Annabel Neasham Racing Pty Ltd from the Segenhoe Stud draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

After missing in 2021, Bumbasina (IRE) boarded the plane to France for another date with Siyouni (FR), again to southern hemisphere time, where she produced an athletic brother to Amelia's Jewel in August.
