Champion racehorse passes away

Tom Baddock - Monday October 23

A former champion three-year-old filly and four time Group I winner has passed away following complications during foaling.

Champion racehorse Alinghi has sadly passed away .

The former Lee Freedman-trained Alinghi has passed passed away following complications during foaling early Monday morning.

The daughter of Encosta De Lago won four Group I races including the Blue Diamond Stakes, the Robert Sangster Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap as a three-year-old.

"Unfortunately Alinghi suffered a hemorrhage while foaling and was unable to be saved, nor was the foal," Paul Messara, manager of Arrowfield Stud said.

"It's devastating news for Arrowfield and the part owners of the mare. It is very unfortunate circumstances.

"It's a very sad day for the farm on losing such a great race mare. It's disappointing and sad for everybody but we've got some of her daughters, so her legacy will live on. "

Although the colt foal by Not A Single Doubt was unable to be saved Alinghi still has one more daughter yet to race.

Alinghi and her daughter by Deep Impact as a foal.

"She's got a yearling filly by Deep Impact," Messara said.

"We sent her over to Japan two years ago to be bred.

"She was due to go to the sales but I highly doubt now, after losing Alinghi, that we will be sending her there, we might have to keep that daughter."

Alinghi finished her career with 10 wins from 16 starts and over $3.4 million in prizemoney, recording 10 stakes wins in Australia and another in America.

Alinghi left six foals for two winners including Line Honours, the dam of stakes performers Extra Olives and Regatta Rebel.
