Chautauqua's Half-Brother Breaks Maiden

Mark Smith - Wednesday October 11

After a stellar career on the track, winning the Group 1 ATC TJ Smith Stakes, Group 1 QTC Sires' Produce Stakes and Magic Millions 2yo Classic, Lovely Jubly is still making news with her twelfth and final foal, Need So Luck opening his account in the $100,000 3yo Super Maiden Plate (1200m) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Ridden by Ryan Maloney for Peter and Paul Snowden Need Some Luck received little of that when three wide for the majority of the trip.

After looking the likely winner when hitting the front at the 250m, the son of Rubick found a willing foe in the Capitalist colt Keenan, who was not about to surrender his lead without a fight.

Need Some Luck edged to a half-neck advantage over Keenan, with the Pierro filly Pajanti a further four and a half lengths back in third.

Sporting the red and green hoops of Throsby Racing, Need Some Luck was appearing for the first time in 17 weeks, after seconds over the same course and distance in May and June.

“He did a good job. It looked like he was going to get a great run, and he ended up three deep almost throughout,” Peter Snowden said.

“There is a bit of improvement to come, but he will need to. I thought he may have gone a bit better than that, but a wins a win. I am sure there is more to come.

“He seemed to switch off the last 100m. He didn’t knuckle down like he should have, but that will come with time.

“I hope we don’t have to geld him. He is a lovely colt, and it would be good to keep him that way.”

Need Some Luck is the seventh winner for Lovely Jubly. The daughter of Lion Hunter had a fan base only exceeded by her eccentric son Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago), who earned worldwide fame as much for his antics of staying in the barrier as he did with his five Group 1 wins, many coming from seemingly impossible positions on the home turn.

Edwina Throsby has Lovely Jubly’s Group III-winning daughter, London Lolly, to carry the line on. The daughter of Charge Forward has a yearling filly by Nicconi and a colt foal by Headwater.
