Cup Day Curve Ball

Joe Carbone - Monday November 6

Melbournian’s are all too familiar with the unpredictability of mother nature which again has the potential to play a major role in the outcome of this years Melbourne Cup.

And while some gallopers chances may be dashed if the heavens decide to open, there are a few horses who will rocket into contention.

The only grey in this year's Cup, Military Mission would benefit from rain - image Steve Hart

Owners, trainers and punters will be keeping a close eye on the latest forecasts which according to the BOM show a likelihood of storm activity. So with that said here is a list of runners whose connections will no doubt be doing the rain dance in the next 24 hours, all of whom are right down in the weights.

#14 Sheraz. Fit and gets in well, we know he runs the trip. Trained by a master and has been set for this from a long way out.

#15 Lastotchka. French import with huge upside. The more the merrier for her.

#17 Military Mission. Versatile galloper racing in fine fiddle, hasn’t done much wrong, trained by the hottest commodity in racing and try’s he’s heart out every time…greys and wet tracks??!

#19 Virtuous Circle. Will be praying for a downpour. Run a gallant second in the ATC Derby as a 3yo on a bog track, drawn ideally, settles well, could be a blow out.

#21 Future History. Lightly raced galloper riding a wave of good form, comes from a family of mudlarks, Hollie Doyle aboard can only be a good thing.

One of the more interesting renditions of the Cup in recent memory, a truly international event, prestige like no other. A piece of history adorning the lives of all who share it’s spoils, ladies and gentlemen- may the best horse win.
