One to Watch – Benalla - Half-Brother for Premier

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 30

Interesting debut win at Benalla on Tuesday for the half-brother to $8.3million earner I’m Thunderstruck and he is trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr as was his famous sibling.

Three year-old Charm Spirit (IRE) gelding Primal Spirit was favourite for the 1212m maiden, but took a while to put himself in the picture, surging late to snatch a narrow win.

"He raced a little bit ungenerously throughout and I wasn't expecting him to finish so strongly," said winning rider Tom Stockdale.

"It's good to see him put a win up on the board and I think once he learns his caper he's going to be an even better horse."

A $240,000 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale purchase from the Yarraman Park draft for Mick Price Racing & Breeding Pty Ltd/Ace Bloodstock, Primal Spirit is the fourth winner from four foals to race from top producer Primadonna Girl, who is also the dam of Group II placed Can’tstopthefeeling in addition to I’m Thunderstruck, a two time Group I winner and Golden Eagle victory, who was also second in the Cox Plate before his shock passing in March last year.

I’m Thunderstruck suffered complications resulting from a fall while he was attempting to stand up after a routine knee chip operation and was subsequently euthanised in tragic news for his many fans.

Yarraman Park will offer the current yearling from Primadonna Girl, a colt by Ocean Park, at Inglis Premier as Lot 461.
