Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday May 24

Exceed And Excel will be basking in his paddock for the first time in twenty-one years when the breeding season begins in September.

Exceed And Excel

The son of Danehill has spent his career at Darley and finished sixteen consecutive seasons of reverse shuttling to the northern hemisphere in 2020.

Exceed And Excel is one of the elite seven stallions to have sired more than 200 stakes-winners, a list that includes the likes of Danehill, Galileo, Sadler’s Wells, More Than Ready, Deep Impact, and Dubawi. He retires with his service fee at a career-high $132,000, which he maintained for his final four seasons, a testament to his exceptional career.

Currently, the tenth-leading 2-year-old stallion, Exceed And Excel, could rocket up the list should his star filly Eneeza capture Saturday’s $1,000,000 Magic Millions National 2yo Classic (1050m) at Doomben.

Trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, Eneeza has been a model of consistency in a relatively busy season. She comes off a defeat of the Golden Slipper heroine Lady Of Camelot in the $1,000,000 Group II Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick on April 13.

A $1,100,000 purchase by Kia Ora Stud /TFI when offered by Silverdale Farm to the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Eneeza won the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes, was runner-up in the Group III Ottawa Stakes at Flemington, Group III Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield, was a luckless fourth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield and was two and a half lengths from the winner when seventh in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill.

Eneeza has already recouped her $1,100,000 purchase at the Magic Millions

Bred by Grant Bloodstock, Eneeza is the second foal and first runner for the Group II SAJC Euclase Stakes winner Sweet Sherry.

A $260,000 yearling purchase for Cloud 9 Thoroughbreds, Sweet Sherry’s first two foals have made upwards of $ 1 million, with a Snitzel filly selling for $1,350,000. Named Madeira, the 3-year-old is in training with Ciaron Maher and has yet to race.

A daughter of Bel Esprit, Sweet Sherry is a half-sister to the Group II ATC Sapphire Stakes, Group II ATC Premiere Stakes and Group III ATC Birthday Card Stakes winner Arinosa (Dash For Cash), and stakes place-getters Onerous and Andaz.

Tough and courageous, Arinosa had a cult-like following, no doubt fuelled by her win in the grey’s race at the 2012 Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Sweet Sherry is out of the talented Amoroso, a daughter of the Group 1 Grand Criterium and Group 1 Prix de la Salamandre winner Revoque (Fairy King), who shuttled for one season.

Carrying the famous Sangster colours of green, royal blue sleeves, white cap, and green spots, Amoroso won three races, and her eight places included the Listed SAJC Balcrest Stakes on debut and the Listed Chisolm Stakes at Caulfield.

Sweet Sherry has a yearling colt by I Am Invincible, which was a $775,000 buy for China Horse Club / Newgate / Go Bloodstock / Trilogy from the Silverdale Farm draft at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Sweet Sherry has a weanling Snitzel filly and she has an early September cover to I Am Invincible.
