One to Watch – Ballarat

Tara Madgwick - Sunday January 14
James Cummings and Godolphin gave us the ‘One to Watch’ on Sunday with an impressive debut win for the full sister to Group II winner Ghisoni.

LonhroBy Lonhro from Group II winner and Golden Slipper place-getter Portillo, two year-old filly La Parva made a pleasing debut at Ballarat after showing good ability in two barrier trials in Sydney last month.

She sat outside the leader Angiolini and swept past her in the straight to go on and win the 1000 metre maiden by a length and a quarter.

La Parva is the third winner from three foals to race from Portillo, a half-sister by Red Ransom (USA) to Group I winner Snowland and stakes-winner Snippetson.

Turning 20 this year, Lonhro covered 91 mares last year at a fee of $66,000 and is enjoying a new chapter of fame at present as the sire of his red hot Golden Slipper winning sire son Pierro.

Portillo has another yearling filly to follow by Lonhro and produced a Snitzel colt last spring.
