Written Tycoon's Written By Heads to the Blue Diamond Unbeaten

Mark Smith - Saturday February 10

After not finding a buyer as a yearling, Written By will head to the Group 1 $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes in a fortnight with a favourites chance following a dominant win in Saturday's $200,000 Group III Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Prelude for colts and geldings (1100m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Jordan Childs for trainer Grahame Begg, Written By travelled up on the speed and proved a half-length too good for the solidly backed Plague Stone (Lonhro) with one and a half lengths back to Native Solider (Sepoy) in third. (photos Grant Courtney)

A debut winner on a heavy track at Sandown-Hillside back on December 2, the son of Written Tycoon has been anything but easy to train according to Begg.

"Because of his barrier manners I haven't really been able to train this horse properly but I have got on top of him now," Begg said.

"We found putting him in early, and then the jockey gets off and gets back on him in the gates, the best way to do it with him.

"He is pretty good once he gets in the barriers, it is just getting him in that has been the problem."

"He has got great determination and he is a really serious racehorse."

Bred by Begg's father Neville, Written By is a half-brother to three winners. He was consigned to the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Basinghall Farm but failed to make his $200,000 reserve.

The 2yo colt is out of the winning Tobougg mare Yau Chin, who was purchased by Neville Begg for just $3,000 at the 2007 Scone Yearling Sale.

Written By adds the first black-type in five generations, dating back to the Kaoru Star mare No Finer a sister to the top-class racehorses Marceau, Zasu and Joy Love and the dam of four stakes winners including the Group 1 Australian Guineas winner and top-class sire Pins and the Group II Shannon Stakes winner Nips.

Yau Chin has a yearling brother to Written By and a colt foal by Fiorente (IRE).

She was bred back to Stratum Star last spring.
