After Five Years in the Wilderness Shoreham Wins his Third Stakes Race

Mark Smith - Sunday April 1

Shoreham's life has come full circle since he made his debut at Flemington back in May 2012, so it was an emotional trainer Saab Hasan who cheered the $61 chance home in Saturday's Group III Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

Saab was the first trainer of Shoreham who won the Listed Galilee Series Final over 2500 metres at Flemington way back in May 2013 before finishing third in the Group 1 South Australian Derby.

Off the scene for five months, Shoreham added the Listed The Sofitel over 1400 metres at Flemington.

It was almost five years before the son of Reset won his third stakes race on Saturday

In between times, he had stints with Gerald Ryan in Sydney and then Les Kelly in Queensland before Shoreham retuned to Saab Hasan Flemington stables in May last year.

Eased back to last by Daniel Moor, Shoreham never left the rails, before engaging the $2.90 favourite Odean who had no answer to the longshots finishing kick to go down by a length with a length and a quarter to Life Less Ordinary in third place. (photo Grant Courtney)

It advanced the record of the 8yo gelding to 5 wins, 7 seconds and 11 thirds from 60 starts with earnings of $769,985 and temporarily at least delayed a career over the jumps.

"A lot of people thought I was crazy but I did back him, so I can pay some bills so whoever I owe, just ring up," Hasan said.

"He's deserved this. He's been placed in a Moonee Valley Cup and Easter Cup and in Group 1, Group II and Group III races.

"I said to Daniel he's a blowout chance here even though he's 100/1, we've just got to ride him quiet.

"The last couple we've had to lead on him which was no-one's fault, it was tempo related."

A $45,000 purchase by James Bester Bloodstock out of the Little Plains Stud draft at the 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Shoreham is the first named foal out of the unraced Redoute's Choice mare Teneales Pearl.

A $45,0000 purchase at the 2007 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale, Teneales Pearl is a half-sister to the stakes-winning mare Hy Fuji (Fuji Kiseki) and the stakes-placed Mary Machree (Quest For Fame).

Hy Fuji is the dam of Group 1 Doncaster Mile winner and popular young Darley stallion Kermadec while Mary Machree is the dam of Group III winner and multiple Group 1 placed Triple Elegance.

Teneales Pearl has a 2yo colt by Helmet and was covered by Adelaide (IRE) last spring.

Darley Stud's underrated stallion Reset will be represented by two lots at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Both will be consigned by Newhaven Park.

The first through the ring is a colt out of the stakes-placed Fastnet Rock colt Refer while the second in a colt out of the 3-time winning Commands mare Night Train.
