Blueblood Pierro Filly Returns a Winner

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday April 16

The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton trained Pierro filly Candlewick is bred to be well above average as a half-sister to Everest winner Classique Legend  and looks set for a good campaign after kicking off with a first up win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Sent out favourite for the Benchmark 72  event over 1200m with Zac Lloyd to ride, Candlewick was held up momentarily for a run in the straight, but was able to sneak through up the fence and score a narrow win.

Candlewick now has three wins and a second from four starts earning over $126,000 and is a homebred for Tyreel Stud.

“It wasn't ideal, probably drawing where she did and that sort of eventuated when she sort of scraped paint and was a bit detached from her rivals as they found the line, so she did a really good job there,” said Tom Charlton.

“She's obviously going to appreciate getting a bit further in time. She's still learning. So I think that was a highly creditable effort.

“I think we're still learning about her. I'd say 1400m is a given, obviously and whether we can get to a mile in time, I think will remain to be seen, but she's looks to have potential as a stakes-class filly.”

She is a half-sister to $9.3million earning sprinter Classique Legend and HK Group II winner Aethero being the fifth winner from five foals to race from top producer Pinocchio, a full sister to Champion Miler and five time Group I winner Racing to Win, who was trained by John O’Shea.

Tyreel Stud have had some sensational sales results with the progeny of Pinocchio selling yearlings from blue-blood mare for $1.1million and $2million, but elected to part company with her last year selling the gorgeous grey for $1.15million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale to Bromfield Park / Group 1 Bloodstock.

She was in foal to I Am Invincible and produced a filly from that mating on October 28 last year for her new owners.

Tyreel Stud also still have a yearling filly by I Am Invincible from Pinocchio that was retained.
