Zoustar Mare Wins French G3 for Interesting Owners

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 12

Champion Australian sire Zoustar posted an interesting winner overnight at Longchamp where five year-old mare Mgheera landed the Group III Prix de Saint-Georges (1000m) for Lord Lloyd Webber and Arthur Mitchell of Yarraman Park.

Mgheera made €145,000 when offered at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale and raced initially for Al Shaqab Racing placing in two of her first three starts before being sold again at the 2023 Arqana Summer Mixed Sale.

After winning a Listed race last year she went back to the sales and was purchased by McKeever Bloodstock / William Johnson for €250,000 at the Arqana December Racing and Breeding Stock Sale and was then transferred to her current trainer Ed Walker.

Mgheera was having her first start for her new connections at Longchamp and she produced a career best performance to win by a length and a half with Oisin Murphy in the saddle.

Royal Ascot is on the cards for this progressive sprinter with Ed Walker predicting more wins are in store with a titl at G1 company this year.

“It’s a huge result. She’s been training really, really well and she looks fantastic,” he said.

“We’ll aim her at all the big five furlong sprints now and hopefully we’ll have a lot of fun.”

Mgheera has the overall record of five wins from 19 starts with four Group and Listed placings and is the best of two winners from Blue Aegean, a winning half-sister by Invincible Spirit to Group III winner Distinctive.

Footnote: Yarraman Park sold the Lord Lloyd Webber owned Australian race filly Too Darn Lizzie at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale last week for $2.4million to Ciaron Maher.
