Trelawney Stud Hopeful for Blueblood Madiyya

Media Release - Monday May 12

A decorated Trelawney Stud family has another potential black-type performer within its ranks with the emergence of Madiyya.

The Cambridge farm has enjoyed outstanding Australasian success with the filly’s family and the daughter of Super Seth promises to add to the roll of honour at stakes level.

Retained to race in the Trelawney colours, the three-year-old followed up a debut second with consecutive wins at Sale and against a competitive 1400m age group line-up at Caulfield on Saturday for trainers Ben, Will and JD Hayes.

“Madiyya has taken a little while to mature and she looks much better than average,” Brent Taylor said.

“I was talking to the boys this morning and she’s a lightly framed filly and will be a better four and five-year-old.

“We’ve pretty much made the decision that she won’t go to Brisbane, there’s another race for her in a week or two in town and then she’ll go for a well-deserved break.”

Madiyya is a half-sister to the dual Group One winner and sire Grunt and multiple stakes winner Zayydani with their dam Ruqqaya a half-sister to Ocean Park who won five times at the elite level.

He also claimed New Zealand Horse of the Year honours before his retirement to Waikato Stud and has sired four individual Group One winners to date.

By Van Nistelrooy, Ruqqaya is out of Zabeel’s daughter Sayyida, a former New Zealand Broodmare of the Year.

“Sayyida was the first race filly Cherry and I bought together and she had ability and has been the gift that keeps on giving,” Taylor said.

Two-time winner Sayyida was a $160,000 Karaka purchase and has been a gem at stud with Ruqqaya’s half-sister Lady Sayyida, by Iffraaj, also the dam of Group Two winners Excelida and Shanwah.

All six of Ruqqaya’s foals to race have been successful and is currently in foal to Paddington.

“Ruqqaya is a very good producer and has been fantastic commercially,” Taylor said.

“She’s got a very good Proisir colt for the sales next year and she’s got a Hello Youmzain two-year-old colt with the Hayes boys as well.”

Named Zayyano, he was sold by Trelawney at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for A$400,000 to Lindsay Park and Cambridge Stud.

“He’s a really nice colt and he’ll probably get through to trial, but I don’t think he’ll run as a two-year-old,” Taylor said.

Trelawney are also currently breeding from Zayydani and her unraced sister Ayyesha, both daughters of Savabeel, with the former’s Snitzel colt selling to Te Akau for $400,000 at Karaka earlier this year.

She has a son of Wootton Bassett and is in foal to Proisir while Ayyesha had a filly by Per Incanto last season before a successful return visit. – LOVERACING.NZ News Desk
