Impressive Maiden Success For Close Relation To Champion Filly English

Dane Squance - Wednesday July 2

Darley’s Too Darn Hot appears to have another promising filly on his hand in the shape of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Tomato Toastie who broke her maiden by more than two lengths at Warwick Farm, winning the Asahi Super Dry Plate (1200m) at just her second start.

With the race field decimated by withdrawals, only eight of the original 19 acceptances faced the starter on Wednesday as jockey Jason Collett jumped Tomato Toastie away from gate seven, but it was Bjorn Baker’s race favourite Pyrolysis (Zoustar) who took up the running under Tommy Berry.

About 500m from home, the Chris Waller trained, $3m Inglis Easter purchase Earnaux (I Am Invincible) commenced to make her run, and as she tracked past Tomato Toastie, the two fillies came around the leader to commence a challenge.

As Earnaux started to weaken, Pyrolysis was still in for a fight, but after she balanced up, the Ridgmont and partners owned Tomato Toastie asserted her authority to pull away and break her maiden by two and a quarter lengths on the heavy 10 rated track.

Consigned by Segenhoe Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions National Weanling sale on behalf of breeder Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Tomato Toastie is out of the stakes-placed Redoute’s Choice mare Al Nafia, herself a daughter of Group 2-winning Anabaa mare Court.

Tomato Toastie’s dam is a half-sister to Encosta de Lago’s Champion 2yo and 3yo Filly English, a winner of the Group 1 ATC All Aged Stakes and the Group 1 BRC Doomben 10,000 for breeder/owners Newhaven Park, who was also trained by Gai Waterhouse.

Tomato Toastie Was A $140,000 Magic Millions Weanling Purchase From Segenhoe Stud

The third winner from as many runners out of Al Nafia, Tomato Toastie was purchased by Cunningham Thoroughbreds and Clarke Bloodstock for just $140,000 and with Too Darn Hot’s stakes winning filly Too Darn Lizzie selling at this year’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale for $2.4m, Tomato Tostie’s weanling price looks a very small outlay!

The sire of 24 international stakes winners highlighted locally by Champion 2YO Colt and four-time Group 1 winner Broadsiding, Tomato Toastie’s sire Too Darn Hot will return to Australia for the upcoming breeding season where he will stand at Darley Kelvinside for a fee of $275,000 (inc. GST).
