New Juvenile Stakes-Winner Wootton Bassett

Tara Madgwick - Sunday July 6

A two year-old Wootton Bassett  colt bred to stay, Daytona made it two wins as many starts when scoring a dominant win in the Listed Pat Smullen Stakes (1m) at Naas in Ireland overnight.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Wayne Lordan, Daytona won on debut last month over 7f at Gowran Park and took another step forward in this tougher assignment,

Despite racing greenly, he had way too much class for his rivals and swept clear  to win by more than three lengths.

He travelled well and Daytona got there easily. When he was asked for a bit of effort he was still a bit immature for a big horse. He had a little roll around but hit the line strong. He's going to improve plenty, he'll get 1m2f well in time,” said Wayne Lordan.

Daytona was a 500,000 guinea purchase from Tattersalls Book 1 Yearling Sale.

Daytona was a 500,000 guinea purchase from the Tattersalls October Book 1 Yearling Sale for M V Magnier & White Birch Farm from the New England Stud consignment and is the second winner from Detailed, a stakes-winning stayer by Epsom Derby winner Motivator.

Detailed goes back to an Aga Khan female family featuring Champion Miler Sendawar.

Daytona is the 66th stakes-winner for Wootton Bassett, who has another great crop of Northern Hemisphere bred 2YO’s that has already produced 16 winners with Daytona the third stakes-winner.

Wootton Bassett is set to return to Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $385,000.
