Cleo Cat tops August (Early) Sale at $355,000

Media Release - Wednesday August 13

A date with well credentialled new stallion More Than Looks awaits today’s Inglis Digital August (Early) sale-topper Cleo Cat, which sold to Yulong for $355,000.

The recently retired mare was offered by her trainer Tom Dabernig on behalf of the ownership group and proved a highly sought after commodity in the auction.

In a sale that grossed $3,207,600, Cleo Cat was one of three lots to realise $200,000 or more (Yellow Sam sold for $305,000 and Caste made $255,000) while Gambler also realised six figures, selling for $115,000.

On Cleo Cat, Yulong’s Sam Fairgray said: “She’s a good, fast mare from a nice family, a really good looking mare so she’ll head to More Than Looks, she matches up nicely on pedigree and as a physical with him.

“We were thinking she’d make her $300,000-$350,000 so we were around the mark.

“More Than Looks is getting his share of mares now and we can’t wait to show him to the public at our stallion parade from tomorrow.’’

Dabernig added: “The whole sale process was very smooth, everyone at Inglis was really helpful, it all went without a hitch.

“I’m happy with the price, she deserved to make good money and she’s worth every penny. She’s a well performed mare and a good physical with a good page, she was very talented and her record indicates that.

“She was just curtailed by injury a little, she could have won better races had she been 100% sound but we wish Yulong all the best with her as a broodmare, I’m sure they’ll look back and think she was a great addition to their broodmare band.’’

Today’s second-top lot was the Lindsey Smith-offered Yellow Sam, which Peter Dunn of Dodmark Thoroughbreds secured for $305,000.

The 6YO was offered as a racing and breeding prospect and she will continue her racing career for the time being – and remain in Smith’s care – starting with Saturday’s G2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield, for which she is a $19 prospect with Ladbrokes.

“I’ll give Lindsey a call and introduce myself and tell him everything is as per usual, just keep doing what you’re doing, at least for the next couple of starts,’’ Dunn said.

“She’ll run on Saturday and then they were heading toward a G1 with her in a couple of weeks so I don’t want to throw a spanner in the works when they’ve got their systems worked out.

“I liked her breeding, she hasn’t had that many starts so we bought her to race her for the next month or so and then likely send her to stud but who knows, if she wins these starts we might race her on longer, we’ll just decide after her next couple of starts.

“We’ve sold a few horses through Inglis Digital before, it’s always a great way to sell and we’ve normally been yearling buyers so we’ve bought a few from Classic and Easter as well over the years. We’ve known [Inglis Bloodstock CEO] Sebastian [Hutch] for years, back to his Coolmore days and he’s always a big help, as he was with this mare today.’’

Entries are now open for the Inglis Digital August (Late) Sale, which will run from August 22-27.

Entries will remain open until midnight next Wednesday, August 20.
