Veteran Sprinter Overpass Selected for Newgate GPI Slot

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday September 17

Newgate and GPI have announced that Darby Racing’s 7YO Vancouver gelding Overpass will be representing their slot in the 2025 TAB Everest and attempting to win the race first up from a spell.

A hard-knocking, consistent Group 1 winning sprinter, Overpass has won over $10 million in earnings to date.

“We are thrilled to have Overpass in the Newgate/GPI TAB Everest slot. The plan will be to run him first-up this preparation in the TAB Everest. He is a horse that is exceptionally effective first-up having won the Sydney Stakes on Everest day last year in faster time than the Everest was won. He was also dynamite first-up in the autumn when narrowly beaten in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes,” Darby Racing’s Scott Darby said.

“We feel that Overpass is a logical choice for us this year, given he is such a high-class sprinter that turns up preparation after preparation and is always competitive at the highest level,” said Newgate’s Managing Director Henry Field.

“Bjorn Baker is very keen to run the horse first-up in the TAB Everest and by locking him in for the slot now it will allow the horse to be trained with the one goal in mind,”

Overpass will have one more trial in early October prior to lining up in the 2025 TAB Everest.
