Granny Brains Them in Oxlade Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday June 2

Twice runner-up in Listed races, the Segenhoe Stud colour-bearer Granny Red Shoes powered home down the centre of the track in Saturday's Listed Oxlade Stakes (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast to earn a well-deserved maiden stakes win.

Ridden by Jeff Lloyd for Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds, Granny Lad Shoes took five starts to break her maiden, which came at the same track over 1000 metres back on April 27.

She backed that up with a luckless second to Eawase in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes at Doomben a fortnight back.

In her previous campaign, the 2yo daughter of Not A Single Doubt got within a neck of Outback Barbie in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben.

After a brief scare when she looked in danger of being boxed in, Granny Red Shoes exploded when she saw daylight to win by two lengths over Axella (Stratum) who was a neck ahead of Spirit's Choice (Spirit Of Boom).

Representing the stable, Toby Edmonds son Trent said they had learned that the filly gives her best when ridden cold.

"We just let her find her feet and hit the line. Jeff rode her fantastically well, cut the corner, saved a bit of ground and got the splits at the right time. She is all class and won with authority," Edmonds said.

"It's good to get a stakes-winner for Segenhoe. They were the owners that kicked us off and a big thanks to Kevin Maloney. "Without their support over the years who knows where we would be.

"I think she will be a really good three-year-old. I don't know whether we head to Melbourne for some of those Group races for the fillies or hold her back for the Magic Millions (raceday) but she has a lot of upside and is a really good filly."

Consigned by Cressfield Stud to the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Granny Red Shoes (pictured as a yearling) was knocked down to Segenhoe Thoroughbreds for $280,000.

She is the third foal and second winner out of the Listed ATC Keith Mackay Hcp winner Shoboard.

A daughter of Show a Heart, Shoboard was purchased by Cressfield for $320,000 off Southern Cross Breeders at the 2011 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale.

Her dam Ten Eighty (Volksraad) is a sister to the Group 1 winner Star Satire the dam of Group II ATC Silver Slipper winner Satin Slipper (Flying Spur) and dual Group II winner and Group 1 NZ Oaks third Zarzuela (Zabeel).

A yearling filly by Deep Field out of Shoboard was snapped up by China Horse Club/Alan Bell Racing for $650,000 at this year's Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Shoboard has a weanling filly by All Too Hard and was covered by Deep Field last spring.

Granny Red Shoes becomes the 57th stakes-winner for Not A Single Doubt who will command a fee of $99,000 at Arrowfield Stud this year.
