Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Thursday December 18

Three heats for juveniles at Randwick on Thursday morning were all won by unraced youngsters that included a million dollar filly from the first crop of Home Affairs and the other two winners both have siblings in upcoming sales.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Home Affairs filly Lady Moscato was having her first outing and showed plenty of the brilliance of her dam Champagne Cuddles when leading all the way to win her heat by a length and a half.

A $1,050,000 Magic Millions purchase from Coolmore for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Racing/Kestrel Thoroughbreds, Lady Moscato runs for a partnership that includes John Stewart and she carries his Resolute Racing colours.

She is the third foal of Group II winning multiple G1 placed Champagne Cuddles, a daughter of Group I winner Sky Cuddle.

Also from the Waterhouse Bott stable is speedy Written By filly By Choice, who made it two trial runs for two wins when she bolted in to win her heat by four and a half lengths.

Interesting also ran in the trial was Godolphin homebred colt Hierarchy, the first foal of outstanding mare Colette, who won the Group I ATC Australian Oaks and VRC Empire Rose as well as a Golden Eagle. She was sent to the Northern Hemisphere for her first season at stud to visit Darley’s world champion sire Dubawi.

Sadly, Colette died last year and only has one more foal, a yearling colt by Exceed and Excel.

Attunga Stud will be hoping By Choice gets to the races sooner rather than later as they will offer her yearling half-sister by So You Think at Magic Millions as Lot 72.

The Annabel and Rob Archibald stable produced the quickest of the three heat winners with Extreme Warrior colt Half Pipe looking a very green conveyance for most of his trial, but when Tom Sherry got him travelling on the bit and running straight to the line, he warmed to the task.

He won by a length and a half eased down at the finish with ears pricked.

A half-brother to four winners from Group III winner Thurlow, Half Pipe was a modest $25,000 Magic Millions Book 2 purchase and has a yearling half-sister by Zousain headed to Inglis Premier as Lot 403 for Stonehouse Thoroughbreds.
