TBWA Westspeed Platinum Raceday 2025

Kat Webster - Tuesday December 23

Inaugurated in 2021, Westpeed Platinum Day is a festive occasion at beautiful Ascot for industry participants and Perth racegoers alike.

A relaxed vibe sets in. Christmas themed activities abound for families, TBWA members gather to enjoy catching up with friends and celebrate  their annual awards presentation on the day, and there's plenty of seasonal cheer on offer to the winning connections of the Westspeed Platinum gallopers who successfully compete in the nine rich Restricted races on the card.

A $50,000 MM Perth yearling purchase, Major Flirt was one of the winners on Westspeed Platinum Day at Ascot - image Western Racepix

Westspeed Platinum was introduced by RWWA from the 2013 breeding season onwards to enhance its hugely successful Westspeed Incentive Scheme, which commenced at the beginning of the 1999/2000 breeding season.

Westspeed Platinum offers a further substantial bonus for each prime metropolitan win, if the horse is sired by a Westspeed nominated stallion.

Since 2000, further benefits added to the Westspeed Scheme are the introduction of Trainer/Rider Bonuses in 2012/13, and in 2019 significant Enhancements were announced to increase annual distributions to owners and breeders to more than $12 million.

RWWA also introduced the Westspeed EPONA Credit Scheme to support race-winning mares.

More than $1.2 million in prizemoney was up for grabs on Westspeed Platinum Day 2025, plus rich bonuses, and the running of the G2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes for the gallopers bound for the $??million Perth Cup on New Year's Day  was the cherry on top of a great day's racing!

Let's take a look at each Westspeed Platinum winner and seek out any interesting relations that are catalogued in the upcoming Perth Magic Millions Sale  - and look further afield for some interesting relations that might even find their way to the west!

R1 Virbac Westspeed Platinum Maiden 1400 $50,000

Race 1 on the blockbuster program was taken out by the $2.40  favourite WESTERN ACE, a well bred three year old son of the much-missed Stratum son I'm All The Talk from the winning Written Tycoon mare Consortium.

Trained by Trevor Andrews and ridden by Willie Pike, the good looking chestnut was having just his second race start and appreciated the step up in distance after running a close third on debut at Pinjarra over 1200m.

Despite racing three wide without cover for much of the race, Western Ace was too strong for his opposition and powered to the line to win by more than a length over You Can Call Me Al (Gingerbread Man)

Western Ace was a $170,000 buy for his trainer at the 2024 Magic Millions  Perth from the Gervase Park Stud draft.

The gelding is the first living foal from Consortium who is a half sister to the G1 winning mare Precious Gem, a daughter of the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Econsul by the mighty Pins.

Her dam, the Peintre Celebre mare Gem Of Gems produced seven winners and next along the female line is Gem's Box by Kaapstad, from a beloved and prolific family that always has some good horses going around - that of Betty Box (Northfields)

Western Ace is closely related to stakes winners Capestad, Vergara, Entirely Platinum, Foxy Blonde, Alinsky, Beauty Spirit (HK), Altrista, Zalinda, Turrfontein, Penny Gem, Hit The Roof and more.

Bred by Milford Thoroughbreds in Nagambie, his dam Consortium was a $210,000 Inglis Premier Yearling purchase in 2017 for G1 Bloodstock / Merricks Station and Ellerton/Zahra Racing.

Her first foal by Deep Field sadly died after birth.

She had a 2022 Splintex filly who is now in the stables of Ash Maley, but lost a colt by the sire the following year.

Happily,iIn 2024 Consortium produced a colt to Deep Field's impressive G2 winning son Lightsaber who commenced service at Darling View Thoroughbreds in 2023, where he stands at a fee of $6,600

Western Ace is from the final crop of I'm All The Talk and looks to have a very bright future.

There are some lovely lots from this family in sales upcoming, could we see any of these go to WA buyers?

R2 Baldivis Vets Westpeed Platinum Maiden 1200 $50,000

The first of several long priced results on the day was three year old filly LONDON'S RASCAL by WA stalwart winner getter Gingerbread Man.

She made a mockery of her 16/1 starting price and broke through in comprehensive fashion after eight starts -  leading all the way under Steve Parnham and putting her rivals to the sword in the straight to record a dashing victory.

Trainer Ryan Hill races London's Rascal in partnership with his father Kevin, and the savvy pair picked up the daughter of Gingerbread Man for a paltry $1,000 at the 2023 Perth MM Winter Sale!

She is the second foal from her dam Amillionite by War Chant, who won two races and placed on 13 occasions in a 24 start career.

Amillionite sold for $4,000 in 2024 at the MM Perth Winter Thoroughbred Sale from Western Breeders Alliance to Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA)

Her Darling View consigned colt by Splintex was a $100,000 purchase for Triscari Racing at the 2025 MM Perth Yearling Sale, having been passed in with a $30,000 reserve when offered alongside his dam the year before - and he is now named Il Frammento.

Triscari Racing had paid $6,000 for Amillionite’s first foal, a filly by champion sire Playing God at the 2023 MM Perth Winter Yearling Sale. Named Secret Intent she has placed six times in twelve starts.

Amillionite has a 2023 filly by Splintex and was not served in 2024.

Her dam Siren Miss by Umatilla was a winner and produced eleven foals for seven winners, the best of which was the excellent sprinter Catapulted by Catbird ( 7 stakes wins including G2  BRC QTC Cup, G3 Standish Hcp, G3 Rubiton Stakes).

Her unraced daughter Inishmore (More Than Ready) is a stakes producer.

Siren Miss was full sister to Listed WATC Crystal Slipper winning speedster  Umatune, dam of G1 Kingston Town Classic winner Ihtsahymn (Ihtiram) and his stakes producing sister Ihtsatune as well as WATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Jestatune (Rory's Jester) who has two stakes producing daughters breeding on for her and is the dam of G3 Vain Stakes winning colt Jukebox by Snitzel.

Their dam God's Tune (Godswalk) was a daughter of G2 winner Neptune Princess.

This is the immediate family of another exceptionally quick Snitzel colt Bruckner, G1 placed in the VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes.

This old South Australian family has been producing good gallopers for generations and goes back to the imported mare Totolo GB  (Sainfoin)

There are several yearlings from this high class family coming up for sale in 2026:

R3 Murray Veterinary Services Westspeed Platinum Sires Stakes 1200m $150,000

50/1 shot MAJOR FLIRT in a major boilover!

Albany trainer Roy Rogers wasn't surprised to see his three year old Rommel colt get up for the win, despite his lack of market support.

Major Flirt appreciated the drop back from Listed grade where he was unplaced but not disgraced in the Lee-Steere Stakes behind the exciting filly Hot And High.

Under talented apprentice Zephen Johnston-Porter Major Flirt showed the brilliant acceleration his sire Rommel frequently imparts, coming from last to charge through a late opening for the win!

Major Flirt was a $50,000 buy for his trainer at the 2024 MM Perth Yearling from the Van Heemst's Lynward Park Stud draft -  he was the omen bet on Ted Van Heemst Stakes day!

The colt is the seventh foal from the very fast Testa Rossa mare Suzebabe who won twice over 1000m in only five metro Melbourne starts for Peter Moody.

All but one of Suzebabe's foals have raced and won, the one unfortunately died young. Her best is Major Flirt's half brother Rock The Ring (Reward For Effort) a 6 time winner of $326,680.

Her 2022 foal was a colt by Bondi and she has no produce recorded since then.

Major Flirt hails from an excellent family being a grandson of the fast sprinting mare Springfire by Snippets, dam of Listed winner Spring Warrior and stakes producer Lady Ashford by Royal Academy who has founded a glorious and prolific family for Peters Investments in WA through her daughters Star Encounter (dam of SW Perfect Jewel, Royal Star and two time Perth Cup hero Star Exhibit) Galaxy Queen (dam of G1 Railway winning mare Galaxy Star), Sentimental Star (dam of ageless stakes performer Sentimental Hero) to name but three.

Springfire was a daughter of champion filly Bravery who did the QLD Derby / Oaks double. When this great daughter of Zephyr Zip met mighty Snippets the result was Springfire and her full sister Valourina - she had two great daughters on the track who both bred on, Timbourina (Woodman) and Media (Gilded Time) among her stakeswinners.

Timbourina's full sister Valadon produced the G2 Shannon Stakes winning mare Noire.

Another daughter of Valourina More Valour foaled the VRC Straight Six winning sprinter Tashbeeh to Rommel's sire Commands.

Last season's G1 winning superstar QLD juvenile Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) is a grandson of Media.

This ever-prolific family is well represented in upcoming sales, of particular interest to WA yearling shoppers might be

Maschino had two winners on Saturday.

Maschino, the stallion that gets more than a few excitement machines might have another one with HE'S A MACHINO

Owners have a lot of fun with names for their Maschinos but they are serious racehorses and this youngster looks promising indeed.

William Pike and Sean and Jake Casey combined for the win with the cracking colt  who came into his racetrack debut off two cruisy trial wins.

Typical of the progeny of his sire, He's A Machino posted a no-fuss, professional performance and looked to be doing it easily as he moved up on leader Sovereign Rock (Awesome Rock) and powered clear for a ?? victory.

Casey indicated that He's A Machino will now go for a break and may contest the G2 Karrakatta Plate.

The colt is out of a mare by the Scenic son Due Sasso who was a top class two year old, so despite the Maschinos not generally being precocious juveniles it will be interesting to see if He's A Machino can buck that trend!

That Due Sasso mare is There'snonesosassy who won 8 races when trained by Casey and she has now had seven to race for seven winners - all her foals.

He's A Machino is the latest of her homebreds for Wally Daly.

They include Ain't No Other Man (2018 by Gingerbread Man) winner of $487,610 and still racing and his younger full sister Nonesospicy who is a winner of three from five and is a talented sprinter.

He's A Machino is the first colt by Maschino from the mare, who has previously produced two fast fillies to him - Sass Machine (2020) has won two of her four starts to date for the Casey stable and $108,630, while her year older sister Just So Sassy is retired from racing and produced a colt for Daly by Darling View”s exciting Zoustar son Lightsaber this spring.

There's plenty of precocity in this  excellent family.

There'snonesosassy is one of seven winners, one stakes placed, out of the mare Achtung Baby (Sarab) who won the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes and was runner up in the G2 WA Oaks  and third in the G1 WATC Derby.

He’s A Machino looks to be another ready made racehorse to spring from this family of born winners.

Another one might be

Perth Magic Millions Lot 301

Pedigree nerds will be all over this one. Presented by Willow Dale farm as agent for Korilya Stud, a filly by Darling View's exciting Snitzel son Splintex whose first crop are up and going and he's bred to be a great sire of precocious fillies!

A first foal from the winning Sessions mare Western Rhythm, daughter of the unraced Beyond the Mist  - by influential broodmare sire Surtee she is a half sister to  Achtung Baby and Transparency and dam of two winners.

This filly is linebred to her excellent ancestress Bibiana Girl 5f x 4f through half sisters Bibiana Mist and Getting There, to the great Canny Lad 5f x 4f as well as to Danehill 4m x 5f sex balanced.

R5 Ridgeport 2026 MM Yearlings Epona Classic 1200m  $125,000 mares

A quinella in the Epona Classic for Oakland Park's Lonhro son Sessions - an ever reliable source of high quality speed, with JAZ SESSION posting a typically determined win

Muchea trainer Justine Erkelens puts the polish on WA Derby / Oaks heroine Machine Gun Gracie and has had a banner year, topped off with this gutsy win by her consistent sprinting mare.

Under Shaun O'Donnell 4/1 shot? Jaz Session was presented halfway down the straight and overhauled leader Lucky I Am (Universal Ruler), then had to fight hard to hold off the favourite Supernatural.

There was just a short half head between the two talented Sessions daughters on the line and Jaz Session carrying topweight of 60kg giving her rival ? was too classy

Five year old Jaz Session has won 5 of her 9 starts since May and 7 from 18  overall, with 7 placings to her name as well and career earnings now in excess of $300,000.

She was bred by Greenfields Lodge owner Tony Patrizzi, and was a $24,000 buy for John Chalmers Bloodstock/ Erkelens Racing at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions.

Jaz Session delivered a lovely Christmas bonus for owner Ian Rickwood!

R6 Milne Feeds Westspeed Platinum Cup 2100m  $125,000

Trainer Ryan Hill's good day got even better when six year old gelding ROCK IN WONDER  stepped up to give the stable a lucrative double.

The strapping son of Awesome Rock notched up his fourth career victory in fine style. Ridden by Hill's partner Victoria Corver the pair sat a little wide going up the hill but had plenty in the tank as the field turned for home.

Rock In Wonder overhauled race leader Noahquintilly (Playing God) and held off a challenge from Kisses For Kelly (Demerit) to claim a tough win.

Rock In Wonder is lightly raced with only 16 starts under his belt and now has career earnings of ?

The gelding was bred and sold by Gold Front Thoroughbreds who stand Awesome Rock, the sire of 2025 G1 Railway winner Watch Me Rock.

He was a $77,500 purchase for owners Elva and Tony Van Merwyk at the 2021 Perth Magic Millions Yearling

He comes from a great old family descending from the famous 1921 Melbourne Cup winning mare Sister Olive - her son Manolive won the 1932 Perth Cup.

I went looking for a yearling from this family but no joy.

R7 Ascot Equine Vets Westspeed Platinum Sprint  1400m $125,000

The first of a back to back double for Westbury Stud stallion A Lot (USA) was a great win for the favourite OUR PALADIN AL who cruised to the post for jockey Chris Parnham two lengths ahead of Lombadina (Ducimus) and Without Reg (War Chant).

Our Paladin Al made it three wins from just eight starts and has only been unplaced in one of them. He was runner up in the Listed Aquanita Stakes 2000m during the winter to the very talented Peters Investments gelding Arcadia Park.

Trainer Russell Stewart is confident the progressive four year old will measure up to black type company at next year’s Pinnacles carnival.

A Lot commenced service in 2018 at Westbury Park and is a consistent source of talented gallopers.

The very fast US stakeswinning son of the mighty breedshaping stallion Tapit broke through with his first stakeswinners in 2024, when A Lot Of Good Men triumphed the G2 WATC Derby and Sir Dreamalot won  the Listed Supremacy Stakes.

A homebred for the late Alan Morton and the Morton family's Queenslea Park, Our Paladin Al is out of their mare Flirtatious (Purrealist) who won nine races, beginning with success at Mornington in Victoria and then at Broome, Port Hedland and Roebourne in northern WA, retiring a winner of the 2015 Marble Bar Cup.

Some yearlings from this family.

R8 Ducimus and Rommel at Ridgeport Westspeed Platinum Mile 1600m $125,000

A Lot struck again with AUTO CRUISE!

A gem of a ride by Clint Johnston Porter gave the Westbury Lodge sire a running double as Auto Cruise stalked the hot favourite Seven Candles (Playing God) and finished better to get the chockies.

The Holly Taylor trained four year old mare won the $100,000 1400m Westspeed Platinum Series Final at her previous start - and with three wins and three seconds from her six career outings she is quite the money spinner!

Auto Cruise was bred by the late Dr Colin Davey from the winning Hala Bek mare Cruisey Bek and is the third winner from the mare who is a half sister to stakes producer Feels Like Spring (Dr Johnson) from whom Dr Davey bred the Listed winner and Ascot 1000 Guineas runner up Feels Playful (Playing God) and the Belmont Oaks / Natasha Stakes placed Feels Danish (Danehill Express)

Their dam Scenic Cruise by the wonderful broodmare sire Don't Say Halo had six winners from her eight foals and in turn was a daughter of a prolific winner getter in the speedy mare Between The Stars (Paint The Stars) a full sister to SW Perth sprinter Star Pet

Fourth dam of Auto Cruise is Haulpet (Haulpak) a winning three quarter sister to SW Paksian and to  Ebony Pak who founded a great WA family through daughters Ebony Magic and Most Secret (dam of G1 winner Covertly) family of star filly Super Smink.

R10 Thoroughbred Breeders Australia Trophy 1200m (TBWA stallion scheme) $125,000

A double for Alwyn Park's Maschino rounded out a great day of racing when CHARINO notched up his second win in nine starts for trainer Brett Pope.

The four year old has a powerful turn of foot and with Lucy Fiore aboard he put paid to his rivals to win going away from a pair of Snippetson geldings in  Prospector's Pick and Snippy Sean.

Charino won the Max Simmonds Stakes 1000m for owners Charlie and Nola Marino in October 2024, and this was his first win since then, the big boy having to overcome a few bouts of shin soreness as he matured.

He now looks ready to pursue a promising career.

Charino was bred by Michael Morton and is the third winner from three to race for his dam Chabelle

The winning High Chaparral mare is back in foal to Maschino and her Splintex yearling is catalogued at Perth Magic Millions (see below)
