Yulong Purchase $2million Extreme Choice Colt

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 14

Yulong have already hit the jackpot with an expensive Extreme Choice colt, purchasing Group I MRC Blue Diamond winner Devil Night at Magic Millions in 2024 for $1.4million and they upped the ante on Wednesday.

Consigned by Kingstar Farm, the full brother to Group winning filly Wollombi attracted spirited bidding after starting off at a lowly $300,000.

The fifth foal of minor winning Hinchinbrook mare Hazlebrook was kept busy walking the ring as various parties became involved before Yulong landed the winning bid at $2million.

The price set a new benchmark for Newgate Farm’s fertility challenged, but exceptional sire Extreme Choice.

“He’s a very special colt, he was our only target that we definitely needed to buy,” said Yulong General Manager. Jun Zhang.

“We can see some stallion potential with him and also we own the sister as well, so we try and create our own families so that is another reason why we had to get him.

“Extreme Choice is a very successful stallion and could be a history (making) stallion in the future, so this is why Mr Zhang is trying to get every Extreme Choice he can.”

Kingstar Farm sold a colt by Extreme Choice’s young sire son Tiger of Malay from Hazlebrook at this sale last year for just $75,000 to astute trader Shane McGrath, who then re-offered the colt at the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale where he made $325,000 to the bid of  BT / Pierre Ng / Campton Racing.

Hazlebrook missed in 2024, so had no foal last year and now appears to be back in foal to Extreme Choice.

Interestingly, her first foal Wollombi, who won the Group III VRC Vanity is also now at Yulong as they purchased her $500,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. She had a filly by Diatonic (Jpn) last year and was then covered by Yulong first season sire More Than Looks (USA).
