One to Watch - Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 2

The highest priced yearling by King’s Legacy ever sold, God Save the King made a winning debut at Newcastle on Monday carrying the same colours as his sire.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, God Save the King was given a good grounding at the trials and scored a recent win at Warwick Farm over 1200m, so he was fit and forward enough to tackle 1350m first up against older rivals.

The three year-old was ridden a positive race by Winona Costin and responded as favourite backers hoped he would, going on to score by two and a half lengths.

Stable representative Neil Paine confirmed the colt had always shown nice talent and would be even better suited over further.

God Save the King was a $775,000 Magic Millions purchase.

A $775,000 Magic Millions purchase from Bhima Thoroughbreds for James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership, God Save the King is the third winner from three foals to race from Group III placed Serenade, a half-sister by Star Witness to dual Group I winner Stratum Star and Group III winner Prague.

God Save the King traces back along his female line to champion mare Emancipation as does Saturday’s Group III ATC Canonbury Stakes winner Hidrix. She is the fifth dam of both colts.

A dual Group I winner, King’s Legacy was purchased as a yearling by James Harron Bloodstock and raced for his colt’s partnership before retiring to stud at Coolmore and has six yearlings for Inglis Classic, which starts in Sydney this Sunday.
