Rising Nine Year Old Magic Consol Opens Stakes Account

Mark Smith - Saturday July 7

Just a few weeks shy of his ninth birthday the Paul Preusker-trained Magic Consol scored a career highlight win in Saturday's $150,000 Listed VRC Winter Championship Final (1600m) at Flemington.

With the all-conquering Craig Williams in the saddle, Magic Consol came from midfield to overpower Moss 'n' Dale by one and three-quarter lengths with Galaxy Raider one and a quarter lengths back in third.

With his maiden stakes success, Magic Consol advances his record to 12 wins, 9 seconds and 5 thirds from 57 starts with earnings of $572,765.

Preusker said Magic Consol had benefitted from patience shown by connections.

"Credit to the owners, when he has had niggles and problems we left him alone and he didn't really begin racing until he was four," Preusker said.

"They reaped the reward today for being a bit patient.

"Craig earmarked this race for me when he won at the Valley and I was wrapped when he drew a bad gate. That's what he needs. Every time he draws a good gate he gets dictated too and he is a better horse when he's out on his own."

The homebred son of Consolidator(USA) is the fourth foal and third winner out of the 6-time winning Shalford mare Shalley's Magic.

Despite being a multiple winner in Melbourne, Shalley's Magic was sparingly used at stud. None of her three subsequent foals have been named.

Pensioned off in April this year, her final foal is a 2yo colt by Atomic.

Magic Consol becomes the ninth stakes-winner for Storm Cat's Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity Stakes winner Consolidator (USA) who shuttled to Darley Stud for two seasons (2006 and 2008) leaving 103 live foals.
