Triple Danehill Delivers a Stakes-Winner

Tara Madgwick - Saturday October 6
Never mind about double crosses of Danehill, the Listed VRC Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington on Saturday was won in dominant fashion by talented two year-old Hinchinbrook colt Unite and Conquer, who may well be the first stakes-winner anywhere in the world to have a triple cross of the champion sire within the first five removes of his pedigree.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Unite and Conquer showed good ability when second at the official trials at Randwick last month and did enough in a recent Flemington jump out to suggest he could be competitive.

Unite and Conquer - images Grant CourtneyRidden by Steve Baster, he quickly found the front and cruised down the Flemington straight to win by a couple of lengths over Zoustar colt Sun City with Grand Scholar, a son of first season sire Wandjina finishing third.

"He's done everything right," said Steve Baster.

"I suggested blinkers after his trial down here and he was still having a look around today, he's so casual."

An $80,000 Magic Millions purchase for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott / Blue Sky Bloodstock from the Musk Creek Farm draft, Unite and Conquer runs for BlueBlood Thoroughbreds.

"He was identified first by Carol Walsh (BlueBlood Thoroughbreds) at the Magic Millions," said Gai Waterhouse.

"He was in front from the start and never looked like being beaten.

"We're hoping to go on to the Flemington carnival next for the Maribyrnong Plate."

Unite and Conquer is the first foal of Maglissa, a winning half-sister by Magnus to the dams of stakes-winners Sweet Redemption and Euryale. He has an intriguing triple cross of Danehill 3 x 4 x 4, as well as a double cross of Snippets.

Maglissa is a daughter of Group I AJC Flight Stakes winner Danglissa, who was trained by Waterhouse so it's a family she knows well given she and Adrian Bott also train Sweet Redemption, a winner of over $400,000 in prizemoney.

Maglissa has a yearling colt by So You Think and was covered last spring by Capitalist.

Unite and Conquer is the 16th stakes-winner for Yarraman Park's ill-fated sire Hinchinbrook, who died earlier this year at the height of his career.
