Changing of the Guard

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday November 13
The late Coolmore favourite Encosta de Lago has ruled the Australian Broodmare Sires List for the past three years, but change is coming and the Flemington Carnival put the spotlight on the stallion most likely to end his reign at the top this season.

Redoute's ChoiceThe most successful broodmare sires over the four days of the Flemington Carnival last week with three stakes-winners each were Redoute's Choice with Extra Brut (by Domesday), Pohukutawa (Medaglia D'Oro(USA)and Teleplay (Written Tycoon) and Fastnet Rock with Sant Ana Lane (Lope de Vega (IRE), Divine Quality (Sepoy) and Kaonic (Savabeel).

At age 17, Fastnet Rock is gathering momentum as a broodmare sire, but Redoute's Choice, who is five years his senior has hit top gear and finds himself in a stalking position on the Australian Broodmare Sire List by earnings with only Rubiton, sire of the dam of Everest winner Redzel, ahead of him.

Encosta de Lago has volume and class that will keep him in the race until season end, but one can't help but feel that the time might be ripe for Redoute's Choice to claim the one title he has yet to win.
