Sepoy's Anjana Opens Stakes Account

Mark Smith - Sunday March 10

Before he cheered on his homebred Trapeze Artist in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick, Bert Vieira had already enjoyed stakes success on Saturday as the breeder of the Mick Price-trained Anjana in the Listed Incognitus Stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

Formerly trained by the now disqualified Darren Weir, Anjana looked to be something out of the box when she kick-started her career with three consecutive wins.

But she found the step-up to stakes class a tough assignment and though she rarely ran badly, finishing fourth in both the Group 1 MRC Thousand Guineas and Group II Thousand Guineas Prelude, black-type proved elusive.

Making her first start since finishing fifth behind Mystic Journey in the Group II Aquis Farm Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley last October, Anjana drew barrier one, however, the field tracked down the centre of the track and Damien Oliver was keen to find some cover on the daughter of Sepoy.

When given her head at the 300 metres, Anjana sprinted quickly going on to defeat Sunset Watch (Akeed Mofeed) by one and a quarter lengths with a short half-head to Fine Dane (Danerich) in third. (images Grant Courtney)

Syndicators Roll The Dice needed to shell out just $34,000 to snare Anjana from the Vieira Group draft at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

With her maiden stakes success, the 3yo daughter of Sepoy advances her record to 4 wins from 9 starts with earnings of $204,950.

Price believes that Anjana is more effective if kept to sprint distances.

"I think she's a sprinter," Price said.

"I remember her first three runs of her career and she was a real sprinting filly.

"She ran well in a Thousand Guineas but I don't get the feel that she should go up to the 1600 metres.

"I think I'll just keep her fresh and keep her happy, and you saw what she did today.

"She might even be a nice filly for Adelaide."

Price indicated the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) for fillies and mares at Morphettville was a realistic goal.

Anjana is the fourth foal of the unraced More Than Ready (USA) mare Further, who is a half-sister to Group III winner Elusive Touch (Elusive Quality) out of the smart racemare Shelbourne Lass (Brocco) whose four wins included a pair of Group III's.

Bert Vieira purchased Further off Limerick Lane for $110,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale when carrying the Snitzel colt Silver Art who has won three races.

Bowness Stud consigned a full-sister to Anjana to last year's Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale where she was purchased by Gordon Richards Racing for $47,500.

Further has a yearling filly by Zoustar and a colt foal by Wandjina.

She was covered by Russian Revolution last spring.

Anjana becomes the 12th stakes-winner for Darley Stud's Sepoy whose top-class daughter Alizee has been installed the early favourite for next week's $5 million All-Star Mile.
